Hi guys New member here but long time lycanthrope lover. I'm actually pretty jazzed by this movie. They have some great talent behind and infront of the camera. The screenplay is by Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven) and Mark Romanek is a very good director. Benicio Del Toro is a very good actor too and is also producing. I read a script review somewhere (maybe on Aint it cool) that described the story as being pretty similar to the beloved original and set in Victorian London and the countryside. It made it out to be a pretty intense and brutal film on the page. I don't think this will be another Van Helsing or The Mummy. Sounds like they are going for a more classic gothic horror.

Since they're sticking to a story close to the original i wonder what the design will be like? Will it be similar to the original or more like Dog Soliders or underworld? Any news on who they've casted as the gyspy woman?

I predict (though I know nothing you don't know) it'll be more similar to the original Wolfman design. They probably want to pay tribute to the original, since it's a re-make. Plus, old- school werewolves were more like that, or they were just wolves.
When they made updated versions of "Dracula" and "Frankenstein," they changed the vampire and monster designs, but thy made them look closer to the designs from their respective books. "The Wolf Man" didn't have a book, per se, but there was "The Werewolf of Paris," which has a similar design to "The Wolf Man." So, yeah.

I for one will be very disappointed if they stick to the original look. I'm tired of the idea that something "new" needs to be done with the werewolf designs. Let's perfect this supposed outmoded look before we start deciding we're going to "outdo" it. To me, the only reason the original looks like it does is because the effects abilities weren't quite where they needed to be. A werewolf should look like a wolf (not a bear, not a cat, and definitely not a man with a hairy face). Right now, this is one of my most anticipated forthcoming movies, but that's going to take a hit if the design is revealed to be Del Toro with a beard that covers his whole face.

For me it kind of depends on the actor. Some of them can get away with the minimalist look because they have naturally wolfish features, such as Jack Nicholson in "Wolf": Whereas some can't. But since it's going to be a summer blockbuster type movie, I think we can probably expect something fairly extravagant.

Got some links to possible concept art for this movie, found on IMDB, but first a bit of explanation. A while back, someone posted what he claimed was concept art shown him by a friend in the biz who said it was for a "2008 Universal werewolf film". He posted links to it in the Wolf Man message board there, but took them down before I found them. However, another user had saved them, but before he reposted them, requested permission from the original poster to do so. Never having heard back, he did quick line-drawing "traces" of the images and posted those instead. I'm not saying at all that these are legitimate or official, as there's no way to tell, but what I will say is that if this is the direction they are planning to go in, I am very pleased. So, here they are: i32.photobucket.com/albums/d11/nouan/wolfbathead.jpgi32.photobucket.com/albums/d11/nouan/wolfbatbody.jpgi32.photobucket.com/albums/d11/nouan/wolfbatmanhead.jpg

It looks more batlike than wolflike to me. Here's my own concept for a wolf man. Bit more wolf than man and a bit Dog Soldiers looking, but that's just me

I can see that, but only to a point. What we've got here, to me, is basically a satisfying midpoint between the totally non-wolfish look of the original Wolf Man, and the wolf-standing-on-two-legs look of your concept. The former, to me, is utterly pointless today, and would probably have been back in the day too if there had been access to more sophisticated makeup techniques (this is not to take away from the original, of course, they did quite well with what they had and I personally love the film). The latter is just not something I prefer, as I do like a little stylization and just having a two-legged wolf running around reminds me more of a Disney character or something.

The scetches are interesting. But from past films they probably don't mean too much at this stage.
