Has anyone here seen The Howling (1981) I bought it on DVD and thought it was excellent. Anyone else agree with me?

Hmmm...one of the most popular werewolf movies of all time...second only to "An American Werewolf in London" as the most beloved werewolf film since 1980, if not longer...features a near legendary transformation scene, also second only to AAWIP...spawned a litter of crappy sequels that had nothing to do with the original but are always good for a laugh...
Nope. Never heard of it.

Just read that the howling remake has a scheduled release for Halloween.

I'm not holding out much hope for this. On the whole remakes are crap and unnecessary.

I agree. But a very rare few do manage to be good, and a very small number even better than the original.
But, I'm not expecting great things form the howling remake. The plot I heard for it does not sound good (I think I posted the plot on another thread).

Apparently it's been "influenced" by Twilight. This means one of two things.
A.) It'll be a clever twist on the typical teenage werewolf romance crap, subverting the genera and bringing werewolves back to their horror roots while incorperating the less stupid ideas that have come up in the subgenera this past decade. Creating something at the very least novel.
B.) More likely it'll Vampire Diaries: The Movie with werewolves instead of vampires.

Aawww well thats a big ass kick in the balls. Yep its going to suck! The only instance i have ever seen a remake flourish is thing like Funny Games, where its the same director remaking the exact same movie with the exact same plot just an american version with a little higher budget. Now that was two great movies where both the old and the remake were excellent.

"The Howling" is my favorite werewolf movie, with "An American Werewolf in London" a close second. I like the atmosphere better in The Howling. And, for me, bipedal werewolves are more disturbing/appealing than a full-on wolf.
In terms of remakes, I thought the remake of "Let the Right One In" was good. Not great, and nowhere near the quality of the original, but not horrendous. It did bother me, however, how the remake basically told you what was going to happen by showing you the photographs of Abby from long ago. The joy in the original was that moment when you put all the pieces together for yourself. And, fwiw, I found the movie quite a bit better than the book.

There's a nice article celebrating THE HOWLING in the latest issue of Fangoria.
I had to take a moment and debate whether to get the Howling cover or the Alice Cooper cover. As much as I love the Coop, he shows up on a lot more covers than Eddie Quist does so The Howling won out.
