Night of the Devils (1972) Original: La notte dei diavoli Italian with English subtitles
Tolstoy’s Vourdalak story set in modern times. That story was also the basis of the Karloff episode of the Black Sabbath (1963) anthology.
Well done. Creepy scary and tense. Good acting all around that gradually goes over the top, which is exactly what the circumstances warrant. Nicely filmed with good values in all departments. The instant gratification blood and guts crowd may be disappointed. But it would not be fair to call the movie slow moving. It is the slow build-up of tension to the point of outright terror that is the point of the story. Plenty of good action near the end.
This is the original uncut version (on Prime). There is a slightly shorter English dubbed version that omits some of the terrifying mental images near the beginning, partly because they involve full nudity and partly because they are disturbing, like exploding faces.

All in all, a very worthy effort. I am told it has brought in revenue something like ten times its modest budget. A terrific first entry by director Andy Muschietti, who would go on to do IT and Chapter II. BTW the two girls mentioned above would both appear briefly in IT. That explains Jessica Chastain being cast as Adult Beverly in Chapter Two.. Saw Mama a few yrs back, don't recall much about it. Might give it another look this month.

The two young girls in Mama are: Megan Charpentier - nasty Greta in IT Isabelle Nélisse - 'girl in bathroom' in IT

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) The 1973 original was quite good for a TV movie. In fact it is a good spooky movie regardless. I am going by memory since I have not seen it since the original airing. Shows what an impression it made. The 2010 remake upped the ante by including a child, nicely played by young Bailee Madison, making it more complex and even creepier.

Too bad, this is an overall decent horror film. Paid respect to the original, as opposed to a shot for shot remake.

The cast for the upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot was announced recently.
Plus a separate tv series is being also developed for Netflix.
So I decided to revisit this polarizing Franchise.
Resident Evil (2002)
The one that is closest to the VG, in terms of look, mood and horror elements.

Resident Evil (2002) The one that is closest to the VG, in terms of look, mood and horror elements. Resident Evil was never my cup of tea, despite several attempts to watch various entries. Although I will admit that the first was better than the sequels, actually having something of a story to tell instead of merely being scenes from a video game.

The Innocents (1961)
Had not seen this one in years. While it is a classic film and Deborah Kerr does a fantastic job, I do not buy the (intentional) subtext that she could be insane and imagining all of it. It does not fit the details of the story. Kerr was instructed to make it ambiguous, which she did, and that led to all sorts of armchair psychology about the theme really being repressed sexuality. Bull. It is a ghost/possession story. Nothing else fits what happens with the children, which she is definitely not imagining. The mismatch is the result of Truman Capote's rewrite of the screenplay because the director did not want the straightforward supernatural slant of the original, this being in line with the Henry James story The Turn of the Screw.
But a really fine watch regardless of your interpretation.
BTW, the young girl is played by Pamela Franklin who would go on to do a great role as the bane of Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Assassin! Assassin!) and later do a really delicious part in The Legend of Hell House as the medium.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Maintains similarities to the VG and major characters from the series are introduced.
But they're reduced to supporting players, deferring to Alice.
A Character not featured in the VG series.
Plus the shift to a more Action oriented franchise began in this one.
