I watched The Mutilator, which you mentioned. I usually do not care much for slasher films but this was a bit different. The bad guy is no faceless inherently evil being. We know who he is and what motivates him, with a proper backstory before the credits. Acting is surprisingly acceptable for what amounts to an amateur cast. Since a lot of it is college age kids having a beer fueled holiday, they are probably just playing themselves. The script wisely does not require much beyond that and being scared and screaming. Camera work is decent although editing is a bit sloppy here and there. (But that happens in even big budget movies.) The plot, while rather simple, is neatly constructed with everything accounted for and hole free. The gore is nicely over the top. Some of it really over the top. The ending is entirely satisfactory with a neat twist on It Ain’t Over. The usual slasher film memes are not just in evidence, it seems they are being made fun of. Examples: Sex = Death, Reasons for them to separate and get killed, Car won’t start. And you know pretty much from the outset who makes it.

Plus the song in the opening "Fall Break" is a catchy little tune

And So, It Begins...
The Beast Must Die (1974)
Bunch of folks go to an Island Estate for the weekend.
Invited by a rich game hunter, in order to reveal who among them is a Werewolf.

Boogeyman (2005)
Basically a Monster in the Closet flick.
An extended episode of Tales From the Darkside.
Ravenous (1999)
One of my favorite Black Comedies and work of Guy Pearce.
Both the actor and film are criminally underrated IMHO.

Ghost Note (2017) Years back, a blues guitarist sold his soul to the devil, kills a bunch of people and got imprisoned by an exorcist. Guess what happens. Not all at once, though. Not bad. A little slow here and there and acting sometimes kind of hokey. More about spookiness and anticipation than gore and action, although we see some of that too. But the story is well thought out and neatly constructed with everything properly if sneakily foreshadowed. The pieces of the puzzle slowly come out in unexpected ways and they all fit with a clever unexpected wraparound to the beginning. Hate that stupid It Ain't Over ending tho'

Meant to post this earlier. Back in the 1970s , WOR-TV used to show King Kong (1933), Son of Kong (1933) and Mighty Joe Young (1949) back to back on Thanksgiving. I decided to revive that tradition by blowing a few bucks to rent them on Prime. My 40 year old copied from broadcast TV VHS tapes that I used to watch were well beyond their acceptable viewing shelf life. And there were commercials. I have all three memorized but tradition is tradition. And I love all of them in a way that goes beyond infinite re-watches.
