Ghost Stories (2020) Hindi, English subtitles
I finally finished watching this four part anthology. I could not watch it straight through because, to be honest, the stories are mostly boring. Only the third one - zombies - had some interest but ultimately flopped at the end. Each of the four stories should have been edited down to maybe half length, the story lines tightened up and extraneous material removed (like extramarital affairs that are not related to the plot). The first story could have been a neat Tales From the Crypt two page comic story if it stuck to the main idea. I could even picture the key artwork frames in my head. But as it is, the film was a wasted almost two and a half hours.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
I've had the DVD for ages and have seen people praise it enough that I figured I should use my lock-down time to watch *something* from my unwatched pile.
Jessica has recently gotten out of the hospital, apparently for some mental issues, and with her husband and their friend move to a quiet New England farmhouse to start over. Almost immediately, weirdness ensues, including finding a young woman squatting in their new house. Jessica sees a mysterious figure in white, hears whispering in her head, and notices all the men in town seem to have bandages on their arms or neck.
Is it a ghost? A vampire? A plot against her?
The dream-like, largely ambiguous plot mirrors Jessica's state of mind as she's not sure what's really happening and what might be only in her mind.
I'm afraid I can't include myself in the group that considers it a horror classic, but the fall New England scenery looked nice and Zohra Lampert and Mariclare Costello were good as Jessica and the young drifter Emily.
Useless trivia time - Mariclare Costello would later end up in one of my all-time favorite films, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. Jessica was also an early movie for Gretchen Corbett, who later appeared all over 70s and 80s TV, including a run on The Rockford Files and a memorable appearance on Wonder Woman.

The Swimmer (1968)
Don't see much talk about this movie. Discovered it on TCM one night years ago. Decided to watch it again. Anyone else here seen it?

But I see it has a good reputation. Burt Lancaster always delivers. Three bucks to rent on Prime. I will think about it when I get through what else I am considering.

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead From Australia, where good things have been happening in the horror movie genre
A zombie movie that is fresh and original. Quite good IMO. Lots of neat violence and gore and zombie action. Twists and turns and a very different ending. If you like zombie movies but are tired of the same old cliches, try this one.
On IFC channel on Prime.

A Place in the Sun (1951) A Kiss Before Dying (1956) A Kiss Before Dying (1991) I remember seeing A Place in the Sun and the 1956 version of A Kiss Before Dying on (I think) AMC before they decided to go for a younger audience and also started inserting commercials during the movies. Although it is not made explicit due to 1950s censorship no doubt, both involve pregnancies out of wedlock and murderous solutions. Although in A Place in the Sun, murder is intended but the death is in fact accidental. This reminded me a bit of the ambiguity of Norman Mailer’s An American Dream, in which a man angrily attempts to kill his rich wife by strangling her but relents, then she is on the verge of killing herself by jumping from a high balcony but changes her mind yet accidentally falls anyway when her husband hesitates to help her back down off the railing despite her pleas. (Got all that?) The novel was made into a rather good movie IMO, but did poorly in theaters probably because the story line was so complex and ambiguous. The murder?/suicide?/accident? being only one example. A Kiss Before Dying was based on a novel by Ira Levin of Rosemary’s Baby fame. As with that movie, A Kiss Before Dying followed the novel quite closely. Although in Rosemary’s Baby, the movie changed the tone of the ending. In the movie, she just becomes subservient. In the novel, Rosemary exerts her authority as the mother and insists that he be named Andy as she intended for her child and that he not be dressed all in black but in bright colors as befits a baby. I have not seen A Kiss Before Dying (1991). How was it?
