Voice from the Stone (2017)
A blind buy from the Dollar Tree a while back that I finally got around to on this cold, wet weekend.
"A haunting thriller" according to the DVD case starring Emilia Clarke as a live-in nurse arriving at her new assignment to see after a boy who hasn't spoken since the death of his mother seven months previous. A boy who spends a fair amount of time with his ear to the wall, apparently listening to his dead mother.
Looks good, but was never really 'haunting' or 'thrilling' enough.

Back again.
It just kept on snowing. By my measurements, the total for the year is now over five feet. This is the worst winter I have seen here. Usually much less snow. For variety, we are currently having an ice storm. Impossible to get out the door without serious risk. That's OK, I keep well stocked on all necessities and a lot of non-necessities as well. Kind of pissed that I had finally gotten the whole driveway clear again and now I cannot go anywhere.
Intermittently losing the internet. Seems OK today. Had to excavate the generator a couple more times and even had to open it because it refused to start for its weekly ten minute exercise. Ice in the air intake ports. Cleaned that out and it started manually. My old old PowerDVD software expired and I had to upgrade. Royal pain in the tuchas. Windows refused to allow me to install anything not from the Microsoft Store and refused to let me do the override until I opened the Store. I did not buy anything but the trick worked. Windows has all sorts of traps hidden away in it. BTW Windows Media Player sucks in case you did not know. I watched some disks on TV but I really prefer the convenience of using the laptop and headphones anywhere. Getting a fancier laptop BTW but it still has not arrived. The latest estimate is tomorrow.
I took a break from watching Hammer films (7 down, 5 to go) and switched to early classic SF again.
The War of the Worlds (1953)
When Worlds Collide (1951)
This Island Earth (1955)
It Came From Outer Space (1953)
Got more of these. I will flip a coin to see which path to take now, Hammer or SF.
In between movies, I have been checking out magic acts on Got Talent clips on YouTube. I used to do amateur stuff in the long ago. My fingers are not dexterous enough now. Out of scores I have watched, there are only three I do not see through and those are all from the same guy.

Back again. It just kept on snowing. You know, I'd like *some* snow around here but it sounds like you're getting a little too much of a good thing. Take care. My go-to DVD software on my PC is good ol' free VLC. Haven't gotten around to getting it to play Blu-rays but I'm under the impression it can. The free version of Leawo does Blu-rays okay, tho it did take some work to convince the PC that I had an external player plugged in.

The flipped coin came up Hammer
Kiss of the Vampire (1963) Decent vampire flick in the good old colorful sets, period piece Hammer tradition. No Cushing, Lee or even the name Dracula. But good production values, OK acting and dialog, Also lots of vampires and rubber bats on wires. Not very much blood though.
Nightmare (1962) B+W entry about insanity, nightmares, deceit and murders. Loads of twists and turns that keep on twisting and turning. Keeps you guessing. Fun if you don’t expect the typical Hammer film. Would have been more fun if Hitchcock had done it.
Night Creatures (1962) Cushing is the pastor of a small English town in the 1770s. The story involves pirates, smuggling, British anti-piracy efforts and old secrets. And Marsh Phantoms. Good acting, dialog, direction.
The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) Hammer had gotten permission to have the creature look like the copyrighted Universal creature. Various scenes and references clearly connect with classic B+W Universal Frankenstein movies. Too bad the movie is not that good. Cushing as Dr. F. struggles to rise above the otherwise poor acting and dialog that surround him. Not Hammer’s best.
Still got four more Hammers, including some genuine classics. But I think I will first flip that coin again.

Abominable (2020)
Well, no snow but it's a cold rainy/icy day and work was called off (more likely because we're slow with everything held up to the west than any concern for us, really) and it seemed like an appropriate day to curl up with a good Yeti movie.
I watched this instead.
Not to be confused with however many other movies named 'Abominable' out there, this one involves a team searching for an expedition that went looking for 'the Yeti plant' which could possibly cure...everything, I guess.
Have to admit, I nodded off a time or two. But...halfway decent gore and a passable creature costume (more hair and less screen time would've helped).
Currently free (with ads) on Vudu.
The same company did a werewolf flick, Dark Moon Rising, a few years back. Not to be confused with another 'Dark Moon Rising' werewolf flick from a few years earlier than that. This one has Eric Roberts and Billy Blanks in the cast and is also free on Vudu as well as Tubi. I suppose I'll have to watch that one at some point.

Hammer again
The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) The first Hammer I ever saw. Also the first non science fiction 'scary' movie I ever saw. The Shock package of Universal horror did not hit TV until that fall. 'Curse' was in the theaters early summer. Among its firsts were the first pairing of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee and the first color Frankenstein movie. On my first viewing at the age of ten, I was scared witless. Over the years I have come to appreciate how good this movie is, especially the clever camera work.
Horror of Dracula (1958) aka Dracula in the UK The second Hammer I ever saw and the first bloody vampire film. Between this and the old Universal Horror that was appearing on TV since October the previous year, I was now a devoted old style horror fan. I have seen this a few times over the years and still get chills at the atmosphere. Also a very good movie with once again clever and effective camera work.
I knew about Frankenstein and vampires from EC comics such as Tales From the Crypt. Also werewolves although The Werewolf (1956) was really science fiction,
I still have a couple more un-watched Hammers but I think I will go back to SF for now in honor of Perseverance landing on Mars.
PS It has now been snowing again for over 24 hours but not heavily. Only about 3 inches so far.
