I've not been scared by a horror film for a very long long time.
I grew up watching horror films, they were as much a part of my TV as cartoons and playschool, and don't find any film scary these days. Fun, and interesting, and cool, and gory, and delightful effects, but not scary.

I think the more you watch the more the less they bother you. I am not bothered at all by most things, however the begging in the Hostel movies really got to me, but i think that had more to do with the fact that it was people doing that to people instead of a monster who can't understand begging.

I found hostel a little boring to be honest. Sure it had lots of gore, but the story was pretty shallow. At least that's how it felt. May watch it again and see if a 2nd viewing brings out the storyline more.

Depends what you mean by scary. Almost any film can do the "BOO" scare and make you jump. That's just a cheap trick. To be really scary I think a movie has to create a sense of unease, make you feel uncomfortable and make you relate to the characters so you can identify with them and the position they are in.
American Werewolf scared me as a kid but also fascinated me. Still does. The attack on the moors is one of the most atmospheric and scary sequences ever filmed. We've all been walking through dark places at night, heard strange noises around us, imagined something watching us. The dream sequences are also damn creepy. Nazi monsters invading home and murdering the family, killing the deer, the bed in the woods and the dream within a dream stabbing. Its fundamentally disturbing imagery to me, and plays very well on the loss of self. The idea that you are losing control over your own body and your mental faculties. Something that happens to most of us at some time especially as we get older.
I haven't found other werewolf films very scary (The Howling has its moments) - just great fun.
I still find The Exorcist a scary, disturbing film. I also love the original Japanese version of The Grudge - the bit with the ghost in the bed is pretty unnerving. I also love Carpenter's Halloween, The Fog and The Thing because in his heyday he was king of creating atmosphere and mood.

I think you just become used to the gore and stuff. Yeah - gore by itself isn't scary. Gore is usually the result of the scary stuff happening.

I think you just become used to the gore and stuff. Yeah - gore by itself isn't scary. Gore is usually the result of the scary stuff happening. You just expect it. But i'm always disapointed if all i see is just a splash of blood. I like to see body parts and stuff!

When I was a kid, I'd be scared of any horror movie clip that I saw out-of-context. The most notable instance I can remember was seeing the end of Pink Floyd's "The Wall," where the cartoon monster is looming over the little stuffed toy that represents Pink, and he yells, "Tear down the wall!" The music was spooky and I thought it might have been a music video, but it didn't seem to end. I was confused, and therefore, disturbed.
