The wandering around part doesn't bother me near as much as spending ten minutes with every person I meet on the off chance they have something important to say. And lord knows I'm not going to remember all (admittedly very well thought out) politics and such of the realm.
I've thought about 'Oblivion' because I've watched a friend play and it seemed okay. As long as it gives you the option to skip the spoken dialog and stick with the subtitles. I can skim those much faster than it takes to listen to someone else read them.
I don't suppose you've much chance at all in the game if you don't join a group or invest heavily in magic?
Of course, the likelyhood of me getting the time to sit down and play it like I should will probably make all my other concerns moot, but with luck the link you gave will help me get into it a bit faster. Thanks.

Well, generally the game directs you to which people you need to converse with. Most of them you don't need to, although some might have nice little side quests for you. I could never remember all the politics either, but it's not really necessary to. I just go wherever the quests direct me.
Joining a guild is a good way to get quests, to increase your characters stats through combat and experience. Magic is good too, but I think in order to become really good at that its a good idea to join the mages guild. But hey, the guilds are one of the most fun parts of the game. Especially the assassins guild. After you've been to Solstheim you could become a lycanthropic assassin. Weee.
Yeah, you do need to invest a lot of time in the games to get the most out of them. It's very addictive, too. I remember my brother saying on the first weekend he got Oblivion he racked up about thirty hours of game time. I never took it QUITE that far, a few hours a day is more than enough for me. Otherwise I might devolve into a blob with nothing but eyes, ears and two hands.

Oooh....I do like the sound of that. Yeah, you do need to invest a lot of time in the games to get the most out of them. My main problem is, if I'm going to veg in front of the computer for hours (heh... if? yeah, right....) I should be finish up my movie so I could move on to a werewolf film. Oh...and while not quite werewolf games, I'll toss out this: Wolf Pup Rescueand Wolf(I actually had this one but couldn't get it to work on my computer. Have to try it again.)
