Once you start watching them, it won't feel like an effort I've already pre-ordered my copy of season 2 I'm just glad it's 8 episodes this season rather then the 6 that we had in season 1, otherwise they'd not be able to finish the storylines they've got running

Only 8? Thought we might have gotten a long run this time, well at least longer than just adding 2 more on!

I'd better not talk too much about it than, or they'll be too many spoilers for those of you that haven't seen it.
I'll just say, it's Good.
Ok, I'll also say a little something about the vampires in the setting, as people may be a little confused about a vampire that doesn't drink any blood. It's explained in the setting that vampires don't need blood to survive, but instead it's like a drug to them, it makes them feel strong, and removes their guilt and remorse and conscience and such feelings beneath a hunger for the blood itself. - at least that's roughly what they said in an interview about the show.
Season 2 has some excellent episodes, and develops the characters more, following on the consequences of what happens in season 1.
The werewolf makeup is improved from season 1, and looks good. The transformations are the AWIL style and done very nicely - or shoudl that be painfully screamingly good?

Season 3 is on the cards and it looks like Robson Green will be joining the cast as a werewolf

Season 1 comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray July 20th, and according to reports, Season 2 will be out on DVD and Blu-Ray shortly after the last episode airs here in the US, so it may be around late September/early October.

Got a few more bits of info:
From an interview with the actor playing Mitchell "Yeah, I think the Sci-Fi channel have brought the structure or the premise of the show from Toby Whithouse, the creator. I don't know really much about that, I don't know when they're going to start shooting it or whether they have. I heard a rumour that Mitchell might be a girl! I don't know. I wish them all the best, it's a cool little idea and it's not surprising that somebody has picked it up, but we don't know anything about it really. I kind of do hope it's different though, I hope it's not so like our show."
As an add-on to the above, I've also read on a few sites that they've already started casting for the american verison. So it looks like it will definately happen. And they've not changed Mitchell into a girl.
From an interview with Toby Whithouse
“But what can I tell you about season 3? You know me well enough to know that it won’t be anything useful.
“There are some new werewolves. There are some new vampires. And there’s a something else. For years I’ve had people saying to me “You should put a witch/zombie/demon/banshee/warlock /goblin/fairy/pixie/angel in your show.” Anyway. I’ve always secretly planned to pop one of them in to an episode, and it finally happens in season 3.
“We discover that the vampires have been doing something secret and staggeringly cruel to werewolves for decades.
“Three have become four now, and in the next season they briefly become five.
“And as I might have said before: in season one, the threat was supernatural. In season two, the threat was human. In season three, the threat comes from within.
“Anyway. It’ll hit your screens in January, I think. Enjoy.”

It's very much worth watching. Though don't expect action-packed. It's a very english show centred firmly on the character dynamics.
Must admit I am curious to see what changes they did in the american remake (if they actually made it - not heard if they have or haven't).
