Anyone remember this movie?
Well apparently they are remaking it with Rose McGowan playing Sonja. No news as yet as to who will play Arnie's old role as Kalidor or Sandahl Bergman's as Queen Gedren. Can't imagine someone big enough to fill Arnie's breastplate! It's a Robert Rodriquez production which explains why Rose McGowan has own the title role.
I saw this as a kid and always hated the scene at the beginning where they threw all those woman down that well type thing that closed. I remember hiding as a kid while my older brother told me they were being crushed. Gave me nightmares!

Apparently when Arnie's kids were bad he sat them down and forced them to watch Red Sonja!

It's not likely to be a remake - just a new Red Sonja movie.
From the posters they might keep it closer to the comics.
Or not. Who knows?

I saw mention of this the other day, but no details about what the story was going to be.

Now you see i didn't know she had started off as a character in one of the conan comic's. I thought the film had been another attempt to cash in on Arnie as a Conan like character without actually making another conan film.
So exactly what is the story behind the Red Sonja from the comic books? I take it she's not the raped sister of a murdered nun like person?

I found this little snippet on the character:
[glow=red,2,300]Red Sonja lived with her family in a humble house in the Western Hyrkanian steppes (modern Ukraine/Russia). When she had just turned 17 years old, a group of mercenaries killed her family and burned down their house. Sonja survived but she had been brutally raped by the leader of the group, leaving her in shame. Answering her cry for revenge, the red goddess Scathach appeared to her, and instilled in her incredible skill in the handling of swords and other weapons on the condition that she would never lie with a man unless he defeated her in fair combat.[/glow]
So it's pretty close to the start of the film.

Well that's what it said at the start of the film.

Which...when you think about it is kind of creepy. After being raped she can't be with a man again unless he can beat her up? I wouldn't mind a bit of a retcon on that aspect of the origin.

So that's where Red Sonja comes from. I've seen her comics at the store, but I've never read one. They've actually teamed her up with Spider-Man once or twice. Time travel, it's a beautiful thing.

Been a long time since I watched the film, so I didn't remember that they kept her making the pact with the goddess. I thought in the film she learned her fighting skills, and chose to that whole having to be defeated thing.

I think I'll try and stay neutral on the subject.
I've only seen Rose McGowen in Charmed *rolls eyes* So it's going to be hard for me to compare her to the likes of Bridgett Neilson.
I would hope that McGowan can pull the part off without it looking like a campy excuse for some fantasy medieval t and a.
Not to say there wasn't t and a in the 80's version( I haven't seen it in years)...I don't know I like my old 80's movies and am resistant to change.

I just hope it's not gonna be a soft core porn type movie to draw in the lads. Last time i saw Rose McGowen was in Planet Terror (I've never seen Charmed) and she pulled that off quite well so who knows she might manage it. I'm just waiting for them to confirm the story. The 80's version certainly wasn't thje worst movie i ever saw. Neilson pulled it off quite well as i recall.
