Okay, still on the topic of the first movie...
I finally watched "30 Days of Night" today. It was all right. I probably won't buy it, but I'm glad i watched it. I probably liked the book better (I'll have to read it again sometime).
I wanted to point out a few major differences between the two versions. In the book, the lead male and female actors were married the entire time; I'm pretty sure they never even fought or talked about separation.
The book went from point A to point B a lot faster. Actually, it was almost too fast. First, there are weird things happening, then vampires show up, then it's about 29 days later and almost everyone's dead. But at least it didn't have so many repetitious scenes where someone becomes a vampire and has to be killed. In fact, only a couple people in the book became vampires; when they said "Don't turn anyone," they meant it. But in the book, there was a very pointless scene where a vampire hunter from New Orleans shows up and gets killed pretty handily. He never meets any of the townsfolk, either; he just comes in on a helicopter, maybe kills a vampire or two, then gets dispatched. I can see why they didn't include that in the film.
The vampires in the book spoke English. I don't know where the weird language in the movie came from.
Finally, the ending was slightly different. In the book, the main character injects himself with vampire blood and kills ALL of the vampires. He just goes out and beat up one, then he starts ripping the limbs off of all the others. I think maybe a couple got away, but it definitely was near genocide. And at the end, when the sun came up, he didn't show any pain. He just sat there with his wife and eventually disintegrated, and then she cried. But she comes back in a later book in the series as a vampire hunter of some sort.
