Who's seen it? I just watched it last week. I liked it, but after I saw it, I went online to see what other people thought (at rottentomatoes.com, for instance). I was surprised to see so many negative sentiments, as I'd only heard good things about it before I'd seen it. While I can understand a number of complaints about it, I still thought it was pretty good. Maybe I need to see more haunted house movies.
By the way, I'm talking about the 1970's version with Margot Kidder, not the relatively recent remake. I might try to see that one sometime, but I'm trepidatious.

I'd always heard it was a classic, but it really didn't do it for me. Not sure why; partly it may have been the 'this is a TRUE STORY!' rubbish. I'll probably give it another go some time. The remake is loud and dumb. It's got some pretty good scares but it's ultimately soulless and forgettable.

p.s. good use of the word 'trepidatious'!

Thanks. What's an English major good or if he doesn't throw a few fancy words in from time to time?
Yeah, the "True Story" thing is so played these days, especially in horror movies. It's like the distribution companies think that no one's going to be scared unless they think that the story really happened. I suppose it wasn't used as much in the horror genre back in the '70s, but it seems to be tagged onto every thriller I see advertised these days.
Another thing I should say about the film (and this includes SPOILER info) is that I thought it was amazingly effective for a horror movie where nobody dies after the first minute or two. The ending was kind of anti-climatic, too. Maybe if they'd made the dog a more important character, it would've meant more. I was very happy h was saved, though. I'm a sappy pet lover.

I didn't like the original, i thought it was quite boring. I remember i first watched it cos i had read the book and really believed it was based on a true story. I think i was 12 at the time, so i was quite disapointed to discover that it was all made up and probably to cover up the face the family couldn't really afford the house. Plus the people who live there now have never had any problems.

I like the original, and it's 1st sequal. Didn't like the later sequals at all.
Don't remember too much about it, as it was such a long time ago I watched it (ie back in the 70s).
I agree the "based on true life" hockum is way over done these days, and frankly the tie to the real events is more of a line of cotton about 100 miles long. Not that they were any more accurate back then, but at least they're was less of them

I don't think i've seen any of the sequels although the last time i was in blockbusters i saw Amityville: The Dollhouse or something like that. Some how it didn't appeal.

An Amityville Horror movie about a haunted dollhouse and starring dolls would be fantastic.
