I just wanted to draw peoples attention to a brilliant new Swedish vampire film called Let The Right One In, based on a well regarded novel of the same name. I managed to watch it this morning and it has instantly become one of my favourite films. Unfortunately it's already down for the Hollywood remake treatment by the director of Cloverfield.
Oskar is a lonely twelve-year-old boy, bullied at school and living with his mother in a housing estate near Stockholm. His parents are divorced and neither of them seems to want to bother with him. So, the boy spends most of his time alone in the snowy playground outside of his apartment block dreaming of fighting back against his persecutors. Then, one night, in the very same playground, he meets a strange little girl. Her name is Eli. She is bare foot and wears next to no clothes but tells him she doesn't feel the cold. She also smells kind of funny to Oskar. The two children strike up a friendship, becoming close. At the same time bodies are turning up in the local area drained of blood. A lone man is also seen moving in to Oskar's apartment block and proceeds to black out all of his new apartments windows...
Primarily a werewolf nut, I'm also a sucker (pun intended) for most things vamp so had to get my mitts on this after seeing the trailer and hearing all the great word of mouth - including a glowing recommendation from Guillermo Del Toro (good enough for me). This is yet another original spin on the age-old vampire myth. Plus it's a beautiful film about childhood, friendship and isolation. It is touching without ever being sentimental and wonderfully played by the two young leads. There is a stark almost fairytale feel to the film. It reminded me a bit of Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone. And like those films it also has some strong violence and bloodshed.
If you like vampire films, horror films in general or just intelligent films about childhood and the human condition then I urge you to check it out if you can.
