The 2nd sequel to Pitch Black.
From the trailer, it looks like they have gone back to the concept from the original film, and have pitted Riddick and a group of mercenaries against a planet's monsters.
Unlike Pitch Black where the monsters were the same race, it looks like this one has a range of different types of monsters for Riddick to show off with.
I'm looking forward to this film, and hope they learned from Chronicles of Riddick.

Has anyone seen Riddick? Opinions?
Pitch Black was a genuine horror film, regardless of the sci-fi trappings. By contrast, Chronicles was sci-fi, although of a dark variety. (Dark Fury, the ugly animated stepchild, was...huh?)
Is Riddick horror or sci-fi? Are the character of Riddick and the plot development as, um, black as in Pitch Black?
And most importantly, is it worth watching?

Riddick was pretty good. It is more a Pitch Black than Chronicles though it does follow up certain plot threads left hanging in Chronicles. It's a scifi action survival film which is mostly concerned with evading and outwitting the 'bad' guys while trying to escape a hostile world. It's not brilliant but Vin is great and it is suitably bloody and violent with some black humour thrown in. Personally I'd much rather watch Vin kicking ass as Riddick than arsing around in those silly car movies. But that's just me.

I understand that Riddick is alone for much of the picture, fighting monsters. That can work if handled properly, e.g., Predator. But I hope it is not just another CGI fest. When he is with other people, I hope that it is more like Pitch Black than Chronicles. His interaction with the variety of people there was much of the appeal of the picture.

The first 25 mins is virtually a silent movie except for a bit of voice over right at the start as Vin is stranded alone on a new hostile world where he is forced to evade various nasty hungry beasties. But then two sets of competing mercs arrive looking for Vin's head which is where the fun really begins. It's an R movie unlike Chronicles so it is violent, bloody, sweary and even has some bare boobage from Starbuck herself aka Katee Sackhoff as a badass merc. I'd give it a decent 3.5 out of 5.

Thanks for the tips darkwolfavenged. I believe Riddick will be on cable in mid-December and DVD/Blu-Ray in January. I will check it out next month and buy it if it is worth multiple viewings.

Riddick was pretty damn good. In today's movies, you rarely see the first 20 or so minutes in silence. And they pulled it off nicely. I also liked how they used flash backs to tell how he'd been tricked onto this planet.
When the Mercs show up, it doesn't fall to the basic hero killing off the baddies. Well, it kind of does, but they manage to establish that Riddick isn't the only threat amoungst them. The banter amoungst the Mercs, even those on the same team is really enjoyable (noteably the one merc trash talking Riddick and the other telling him to take it back when they start hearing shit).
Plus, we get to see Starbuck Topless! Asking nicely....

I'm quite looking forward to seeing it. I hear he remortgaged his house in order to get the film made. It's done so well they're now considering a Riddick 4. I'm waiting to get a copy on blu ray. I have a birthday coming up so fingers crossed someone will get me it.

I hope nothing gets in the way. www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=114079I would gladly send you a blu-ray copy for your birthday but my email service does not seem to accept non-virtual attachments. Happy birthday next Sunday!

Awww thank you for that.
I really hope that they don't turn Riddick 4 into something like the Chronicles.... *Shudders*

Looks like they learned from the second film, and stuck to the core elements of the 1st one that helped make it such an enjoyable film.
I rather like the interaction between the two merc gangs.
Thought it was a little rougher than the 1st film, the script probably could have done with a little more polish to it, but otherwise a fun enjoyable film.

It worked because they kept it much simpler than the confusingly complicated Chronicles. Basically it was Riddick battling monsters, inhuman and otherwise, just like in the first. And that was what we came to see after all.

A good one! Just the right amount and variety of Riddick battling monsters on his own balanced by the interaction with (and among) human pro- and antagonists (and more monsters!) The alien 'dog' could have been embarrassing in other hands (*) but here it worked and gave a believable reason for Riddick to go nutzoid, just the way we like him. Glad I got the DVD, I will be watching this again. (*) like John Carter
