Looks like Universal are dusting down Larry Talbot for another tussle with the full moon as part of their Marvel-like shared universe for classic monsters that (sorta) kicked off with Dracula Untold. They have a writer for the new movie which is likely to be set in present day with a possible release date of April 2017. Personally I really liked the 2010 movie and just wish they'd use that as the basis/history for this latest version...a semi sequel with perhaps a descendant of Benicio's Lawrence Talbot somehow inheriting the curse. I expect though it will be a completely new take. We'll see.

Prepare to set your expectations to zero:
“We don’t have any capes [(superheroes)in our film library]. But what we do have is an incredible legacy and history with the monster characters. We’ve tried over the years to make monster movies — unsuccessfully, actually. So, we took a good, hard look at it, and we settled upon an idea, which is to take it out of the horror genre, put it more in the action-adventure genre and make it present day, bringing these incredibly rich and complex characters into present day and reimagine them and reintroduce them to a contemporary audience.”
IDIOTS.

Yep, my expectations are through the floor now.
It's obvious that Universal SO want their own superhero-ish shared universe and are prepared to bastardize their classic back catalog to make it happen. And they kinda tried it already with Van Helsing...and that was terrible! I haven't seen Dracula Untold which is now the proper kick off for this project so have no idea how it plays - if Drac is now basically a caped superhero. All I know is if you take the classic monsters and turn them in to good guy heroes then they stop being classic monsters! Universal's Mummy films (the first two anyway) only sorta worked cuz they were silly cartoonish Indiana Jones rip offs. Having said all that though, this sort of thing can work if done right. Van Helsing sucked majorly but I do love The Monster Squad. It understands the tropes of the classic monsters and isn't afraid to go dark and kinda nasty. Duncan Regehr is still one of my fave Dracs.

Watched this again earlier today.
I'll always wonder how things would've turned out, if Mark Romanek stayed on as Director?
Joe Johnston was a hired gun, the end result reflects that.
Hope Emily and Benecio team up again in the future.
Liked them together here and in Sicario.

Instead of the ill-fitting and IMO ill-advised CGI scene, I would have liked for Lawrence to shoot Sir John with silver bullets in an appropriately dramatic scene, after someone (Gwen? Maleva?) had re-loaded the gun, much to the surprise of Sir John. This could have allowed some further character development earlier on. But CGI fests are mandatory these days in you want box office appeal.

They shot multiple endings for this remake. Yes, I am aware of the alternate endings on the BluRay edition. I was imagining something else in place of the CGI fight scene, which does not seem to serve any purpose other than to have a CGI scene.

That fight scene drew groans and laughter from the crowd I saw it with.
