Chillerama (2011) Horror comedy Four movies being shown on the last night at the last drive-in theater with a framing story about the people at the drive-in and an employee slowly becoming a zombie and where that leads to. You do not want to know the circumstances in which he gotten bitten or where. The movies within the movie are: Wadzilla Giant sperm cell threatens New York IMO the worst of the four. They try but the jokes sort of fall flat. Nowhere near as funny as it thinks it is. I Was A Teenage Werebear A musical. That's right, a musical that references every teenage movie genre ever, I think. From serious (who wore a red jacket and I don't mean Dylan) to high school songfests to surfer parties and everything in between. The songs are OK if not great. Recognizing references keeps it afloat where humor does not. Oh and there are werebears. The Diary of Anne Frankenstein Yes, they went there B+W, in German with English subtitles. That's what I said Witty and pretty funny in places. The monster, which is supposed to be Hitler's secret weapon, turns out to be Jewish and kills Hitler The best of the four IMO. Deathication / Zom B movie The movie being shown at the drive-in is Deathication. This is about a movie that will kill you by making you uncontrollably sh!t. Deathication, get it? Thankfully we do not see much of that one before the action shifts to the audience in the cars. You see, the zombie has contaminated the popcorn butter and… That is the Zom B movie part. Bottom line: Uneven mix that is mostly watchable once you get past the first one and sometimes really good. If you check it out, be aware that there is some really gross stuff along the way. And hang around for the credits, some good stuff there and I don’t mean bloopers.

The Undead (1957) A low budget B+W from Roger Corman. Neither vampires nor zombies despite the title. Past life regression that becomes real. 20th century young woman mentally goes back in time to 16th century and enters the body of her former self. Cheap and cheesy sets and FX but a surprisingly good tale. Witches and familiars, Satan himself, a death sentence by beheading. Acting is reasonable if not great, rather entertaining Shakespearean style dialog. And a gravedigger with grisly versions of nursery rhymes. A pretty good watch if you keep expectations at Roger Corman 1957 levels. Free on Tubi. tubitv.com/movies/493007/the_undead

[ I remember watching this on WPIX's Chiller Theater. I loved watching Chiller Theater on Saturday nights on Channel 11 in NYC even when the movies sucked. All those fingers somehow set a really creepy mood. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok6uzndOmPA

Girl House (2014)
Off work early and this caught my eye.
From IMDb: "A young college student desperate for tuition money moves into a house that streams content to an X-rated website. After a deranged fan determines the house's location, she finds herself in a terrifying fight for her life."
Basically a throwback to the sorority house slasher flicks of the 80s. Starts off with the typical flashback prologue of a youth getting bullied. Nowadays, said youth is a not terribly well-adjusted adult. In this case, he's a big fan of the Girl House website and takes a liking to the new girl. When he feels slighted he... doesn't take it well and unfortunately for the girls, he's now a computer engineer so hacking the hack-proof site is no problem. Nor is finding the house's location and locking it down from communication with the outside world.
Better done than I expected. A reasonable amount of nudity given the genre and premise, but not as excessive or sleazy as I expected. The kills are pretty brutal, edging into torture-porn territory sometimes. And some of the brutality is directed at kids in the beginning, so if that's a trigger you might want to skip the first 10 minutes or so.
The cast is pretty good. There's some typical stupidity like most of these kinds of films have - mainly things like not finishing the bad guy off when they have a chance.
The only person in it I recognized was a young Camren Bicondova right before she landed in Gotham as Selina Kyle.
Apparently filmed in Canada (of course) it's at least set in my home state so I'll give it a point for that, too.

The Monster of Piedras Blancas (1959) B+W Cheap, cheesy, slow moving with almost no real horror action or ooky stuff. Acting and dialog are as you would expect - cheap and cheesy. You do not see anything of the monster except sometimes its claw until around the 45 minute mark, and then only brief glimpses. The whole movie is only 71 minutes. But seems longer. And then you only get to see it a lot around 8 minutes before the end. It looks something like Black Lagoon but goofier. Although the monster does the de rigeur carrying the unconscious girl scene near the end, IMO it could have gotten a lot more interesting much earlier. There is a scene where the young girl goes skinny dipping (you don't actually see anything) and the claw touches her clothes that she left on the rock. I was rooting for him to steal the clothes. No such luck. I missed seeing this in the movies back then because we all went to a wedding that Saturday. Later I saw a still photo involving the gill man like monster contemplating a severed head it was holding. I was fascinated by movies with severed heads. So that is why I watched it, to make up for missing my usual Saturday morning at the movies routine in the long ago. I guess I did not miss much.

Stephen King's The Night Flier (1997) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) Dan Curtis' Dracula (1973) The Night Stalker (1972) And not one of them sucks. The Night Flier is IMO the weakest although it is rather better than the critics say. And all the others are first class.

Mama (2013)
Very young girls (3 and 1) are saved by a ghost from being murdered by their father in a remote abandoned cabin. The ghost raises them for five years until they are discovered and brought to the home of their uncle and his girlfriend. The ghost, who the girls call Mama, follows them.
No gore and not much violence but really creepy and spooky as the ghost tries to reclaim the children as her own. Back story is gradually revealed in a variety of ways, a nice change from the hackneyed ‘reveal all’ scene. Good back story as well.
Good acting all around especially from the young girls, who are actually portrayed by players several years older than their parts although they easily pass as 8 and 6. The older one was already an experienced actress. The younger one does fine in her debut appearance. Dialog is good. CGI/costume ghost is pretty good and nicely scary if you do not demand too much realism. It is a ghost after all. Story evolves well and builds to a complex climax. Direction, editing, camera work etc. – no complaints anywhere.
All in all, a very worthy effort. I am told it has brought in revenue something like ten times its modest budget. A terrific first entry by director Andy Muschietti, who would go on to do IT and Chapter II.
BTW the two girls mentioned above would both appear briefly in IT.
