A straight rip-off of / send-up of / homage to Fright Night 1985 except the next door neighbor is a werewolf instead of a vampire and the teenage kid is a girl not a boy. Scene after scene is a redo of the same scene in FN85. The movie has been criticized for being a rip-off but it is clear that you are supposed to get that. The neighbor is named Jared, which sounds like Fright Night's Jerry Dandridge by way of Labyrinth's Jareth. The main players turn in decent performances, the rest of the cast pretty much suck. Not terribly scary, more funny than not and usually intentionally so. Kevin Sorbo as the TV hunting show star turned werewolf hunter hits exactly the right serio-comic note. Special effects are not the greatest but are not bad for SyFy. In fact in the universe of SyFy TV movies, the whole film is an Academy Award nominee. Bottom line: Not the greatest werewolf film of all time but better than a lot of the junk being howled about these days. And for SyFy, it was great. Fun if you do not take it too seriously. After all Never Cry Werewolf does not take itself too seriously. As an example of not taking itself too seriously, when the werewolf explodes (if you did not already see the movie what are you doing inside this spoiler?) Where was I? Oh yes, when the werewolf explodes and everyone gets splattered with yucky stuff, they react exactly as anyone would after getting splattered with yucky stuff. Yuck! get this off me!
