The kids are very suspicious about their new neighbor, Lawrence Talbot. His dog's howls are giving Alvin bad dreams about werewolves. Turns out that Talbot does not have a dog. Even though he has bones … Theodore gets bitten and becomes a werewolf next full moon. This is all mixed up with a school play about Jekyll and Hyde with Alvin playing the titular character and Alvin’s penchant for causing problems, like accidentally blowing up the auditorium, resulting in Theodore being given the role instead. Multiple side plots as well. A bunch of songs along the way of course including with the Chipette girl group. The finale is the play itself which gets really crazy when Theodore changes and then the Talbot werewolf shows up and the players try to ad lib to cover all this while the auteur director is having a panic attack. OK not all that scary. No gore either. And nobody dies. But ‘acting’ and dialog are not bad, animation quality is good, the story is complex enough to hold attention. And Talbot turns into a pretty good cartoon werewolf. Theodore less so. Plus a unique but oddly logical way of curing lycanthropy. Overall a fun ride if you are willing to turn your ‘seriousness’ dial way down. I love the parting lines of the woman principal who is retiring. “I‘m taking a less stressful job driving trucks loaded with nitroglycerine over rickety bridges in South America.” Anybody remember The Wages of Fear? It is interesting that after that directorial debut, Clouzot would next make Diabolique.
