Did the King movies collection Graveyard Shift (1990) I had not seen this one before. But I had read the short story years before the movie came out. Pretty good but a fair amount of padding bogs it down. The original story just did not have enough beef to support a feature length treatment. So we get a real SOB of a boss and all his meanness. We get complicated stuff about an exterminator, although Brad Dourif’s creepy and eccentric portrayal is a delight. And we get a lengthy fight for which I can find no reason except padding. The plot: A cotton mill infested with rats. And something else. Not a bad watch, creepy atmosphere, pretty good FX. But not classic King. A twist in the plot that appears only in the movie reminded me very strongly of a really creepy story I read in a short-lived horror magazine around 1959. I would have to give away too much to explain it but I am pretty sure somebody involved with the movie had read it as well. Why were there thousands of rats in a cotton mill? What were they living on? Hint: There was a cemetery right next to it. And something else in the tunnels. The dog dies. So does the girl. Dead Zone (1983) When I first read the book, I was a bit confused. It struck me as a series of unrelated stories that happened to involve the same character. A decent read but less than satisfying at the time. The I saw the movie. I initially wondered why they had Christopher Walken play the lead character. I did not see it that way at all. While watching the movie that first time, it gradually dawned on me that the lead character IS the story, his evolution over time from having this power and how it mattered. This prompted me to read the book again and sure enough it was all there from the beginning. I have seen The Dead Zone a few times now and each time I appreciate anew the work of Walken and director Cronenberg. No exception this time around. Pet Semetary (1989) The book was really creepy and the movie did not disappoint at all. Again I had seen this a few times over the years and still enjoyed it once again. The slow development from the back story up through the scary events and the extended climax are just as much spooky fun as the first time. Dogs stay dead. Cat does not. Neither does… Silver Bullet (1985) A finely blended stew of traditional King ingredients – horror, deaths, a nasty protagonist, kids – and some unique craziness. All you werewolf aficionados out there know this one by heart and I am sure you appreciate its merits and how it ages well. I do not know how many times I have watched it now. Four or five? No matter, I know I will watch it again and having the disc I can do that whenever I get my fur up to do that Hmm, what next. PS I had one of those single serving Cherry Pie things in honor of the day. 3/14

Earlier today, in between the King movies. I caught
The 300 Spartans (1962)
Fine epic style tale of the battle at Thermopylae when the vast Persian army was held back long enough by a small force for the Greeks to combine for the first time ever and embark on a war that would eventually defeat Xerxes. This is viewed in Greece as symbolic of the first appearance of a Greek national identity beyond the numerous city-states that viewed each other suspiciously and sometimes warred with each other. Same story as 300 (2007) but presented realistically and not in comic book fashion.
1962 was an incredible year for movies:
Cape Fear Days of Wine and Roses Dr. No How the West Was Won Lawrence of Arabia Lolita The Longest Day The Manchurian Candidate The Music Man Mutiny on the Bounty Sweet Bird of Youth To Kill a Mockingbird What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Hunter Hunter (2020) From IMDb: "Joseph and his family live in the remote wilderness as fur trappers, but their tranquility is threatened when they think they are being hunted by the return of a rogue wolf, and Joseph leaves them behind to track it." Really good. Gets rough. Preview: youtu.be/AzRhDvMO2c8Watched it on Hulu.

Skylines (2020)
Follow-up to Skyline (2010) and Beyond Skyline (2017).
Seriously, how are there three of these? I know I've seen the first two but remember next to nothing about them and this one will likely join them in that regard.
Still, I like star Lindsey Morgan from her days as Raven on The 100 and frickin' love Rhona Mitra (who isn't in this nearly enough).
On Netflix.

Watched some of the Universal Dracula collection. Holding off on the rest until I decide on whether to get the Frankenstein collection and binge watch all eight of those, three of which feature Dracula.
Dracula (1931)
Lugosi's performance in which he invents what most people think of as Dracula is still impressive even after umpteen viewings. Lugosi is firmly ensconced as the archetypal Dracula despite having played Dracula only twice in movies. The scenes featuring the interplay between Edward Van Sloan and Bela are my favorites, underscoring that much of the movie is derived from a play.
Some other parts tend to drag a bit, but are buoyed up somewhat by the overall atmosphere. In 1931 when the Dracula meme was brand new, I guess they would have been just fine.
Dracula's Daughter (1936)
Fairly slow paced but IMO quite intriguing. Gloria Holden is really good as the reluctant vampire who cannot resist her drives. The carefully muted lesbian subtext is surprising for 1936 but works well. Van Sloan, Universal horror movie regular, is good as usual.
This movie was originally supposed to include a prolog scene explaining more about the background of the Daughter. It would have featured Lugosi as Dracula in the 15th century. Instead the film opens with his daughter ritually cremating her father’s unseen corpse, freeing his soul.
Son of Dracula (1943)
Lon Chaney Jr. plays the Count, disappointing Lugosi once again. Chaney had multiple horror movies under his belt by this time including the Wolf Man and Kharis the mummy roles. Scream Queen Evelyn Ankers is among the cast. She had previously and would again appear with Chaney.
This movie often gets bad mouthed because Chaney supposedly plays a poor Dracula. IMO he simply plays a different Dracula than Lugosi did. I think his portrayal and the movie as a whole work just fine. More FX than the 1931 film and it is rather spooky as well. Nothing like today’s FX but nicely atmospheric.

Body Cam (2020)
Mediocre supernatural thriller about a malevolent force targeting police officers and the one patrol cop (songstress Mary J. Blige) who begins to unravel the puzzle.
I watched on Amazon Prime. Also on Hulu.

Bury (2014)
Annoying Brooklyn hipsters, terrorized by a creature in the wilderness.
That should've remained unseen.
House of the Devil (2009)
Late Phases (2014)
Wrong Turn (2021)
I'll give them credit for going in a different direction.
There were a few nods to the 2003 film.
Fatale (2020)
Unintenionally hilarious semi rip off of Fatal Attraction.
First The Hunt now this, Hillary Swank has been slumming lately.
The Hurricane Heist (2018)
Into the Storm and Hard Rain had an ugly bastard child.

The crowd got excited at the fight that was about to happen, then the end credits rolled Why did they end it there?
