Okay, so the recent discussion of Starship Troopers got me thinking about what other golden-age science fiction novels ought to be committed to screen, rather than hollywood churning out crappy original sci-fi solely to show off special effects. Recently we've had Solaris and A Scanner Darkly, which I thought were good even if they did bomb at the box office. Anyway, in the course of my investigation I discovered that there are actually a whole host of upcoming projects for sci-fi fans to get excited about.
2008-9 is going to be a huge revival period for scifi adaptations, with Fahrenheit 451, The Stars My Destination, Neuromancer, The Time Traveler's Wife and John Carter of Mars all slated for release. They're also doing Philip K Dick's Radio Free Albemuth (written & directed by first-timer John Alan Simon whose only other credits include associate producer on THE HOWLING II ) and The Owl in Daylight, a biopic in which Dick himself will be played by Paul Giamatti. Did I miss anything?
Here's some more stuff that I reckon ought to be adapted sooner rather than later (most of them are more relevant now then they ever were):
RINGWORLD (scrap the 'Halo' movie - the game didn't even have a coherent story ... have Alex Garland return to the source material instead)
BRAVE NEW WORLD (done properly, not another TV version)
THE SIRENS OF TITAN (movies based on Vonnegut novels tend to be tricky because the books themselves are so convoluted ... it would require a director like Terry Gilliam or David Lynch)
PLAYER OF GAMES (or something else by Iain M Banks ... the poor guy's never had any of his sci-fi novels made into movies)
MORE HEINLEIN!!! (Stranger in a Strange Land! The Moon is a Harsh Mistress!)
A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ (any time a director feels like a challenge ...)
