As a longtime Zombie movie fan, I cant believe i havnt watched these four spanish classics before.
The movies are about a group of portugese templars who after being found guilty of devil worship have the eyes burned out before being burned alive. They do in each movie return in modern times. (the story of the four movies does not work in continuity)
Its actually abit more like horse riding mummies than zombies
Tombs of the blind dead.
Great movie. Its the one the feels the creepiest. Not much talking going on. The ending is left open to sequels. but still the sequels have nothing to do with what happens in this movie.
Return of the evil dead.
Almost as good as the first one. The story is much better(the second half reminds me alot of Night of the living dead) But it isnt as moody as the first movie.
This movie is really contradicting the first one in the story department. as both the templars origin. the place they are at is different(it was an old deserted church town in the first. but is greatly inhabited in this one.)
also, the reuse of some footage from the first movie is a minus(the forth movie will also reuse footage, but not as much).
The ghost galleon.
By far the worst movie in the series.
This one is set mostly on a ghost ship. But what is the templars doing there? acording to the story in this movie. After they had their eyes burned out. They werent killed. But instead sent of on a boat... A giant boat filled with gold and satanic artifacts? weir.
This movie is very slow. and not much is happening until the ending.
This movie also seem to be made in italy rather than spain.
The night of the seagulls
This movie is losely based on the same HP Lovecraft story that also became the movie Dagon(wich i love).
Once again they are in a small portugese town.
But in this movie. the story is that the townspeople have to sacrifice seven virgins during seven nights every seven years or the templars will slaughter the whole village.
This movie. While not as good as the first two. Is quite good. And surely alot better than the ghost galleon.
Also. In this movie it aint satan that they get their power from. But some ugly god of the sea(just like in the lovecraft novel). I think it looks like a frog with horns.
As a whole. I think it was a very good series of movies.
Ive also heard that some movies. Including one with paul nachy has zombies that stole their looks from these.
