I've been reading The Werewolf Book by Brad Steiger and he was discussing who sprang to mind when someone said the word werewolf? For example, when someone says the word Vampire i automatically think of Dracula and in particular Christopher Lee's Dracula. In the book he argues that the two main ones would be Lon Chaney Jr's Lawrence Talbot or Oliver Reed's Leon.
When someone says werewolf to me i think of David Kessler from An Amercian Werewolf in London, but with regards the ultimate werewolf i would suggest Lawrence Talbots haunted performance.
What does everyone else think?

Lon is ofcourse great as the Wolf-Man, and before I got into Naschy he was the "mind-springer" so to speak. So now I see Naschy as the best, but I don't blame people for not sharing this opinion. I wouldn't say Oliver Reed is one of the ultimate werewolves, although he is ofcourse a masterfull actor. Karloff is my Frankenstein Monster, Lee is my Dracula and Naschy my Werewolf. Viva el Hombre-Lobo!

Hmm. For me Lon Chaney Jr and Naschy always come to mind as well, probably because they performed the role so many times. Also Jack Nicholson because he made such a great wolf man.

When I think "werewolf," I think of a generic comic book-style werewolf.
When I think "vampire," I think Underworld-style contemporary goth vampire.

Amazing how everyones influences are different. For werewolves i always think of Kessler but i think it's more for the transformation side of things. But prehaps that will chance once i see a Naschy movie?

I don't think of a particular actor when I think of 'werewolf' or 'vampire'.
For werewolf I always picture the biped wolf headed style werewolf, and always when their transformed, not when their in human form. The biped that can and does go down to all fours for speed when chasing something, but goes upright for the rest of the time.
For Vampire it tends to be a bit more tricky. As I get a kalidescope of images overlapping, which includes the typilca 'dracula' look, and the more modern 'goth' look, as well as the old nosforatu (sp) look (like in salems lot). I don't think I have a single Iconic image for 'vampire'.
Now when someone says 'dracula' I think of Christopher Lee. But, I still don't think of a particular actor for any specific werewolf.
A little odd that we don't have a specific werewolf icon for the species, unlike say with a vampire where we have dracula. Or is there one I don't know about?

indeed, but is the wolfman a single person in the stories (like dracula)? or is it more a subspecies kind of thing, where in the various films it's a different character/person?

Interesting. I wonder if they'll keep the name in the remake.
