Why is it so hard to make a good werewolf movie? Vampires, even zombies, have some pretty awsome movies out, but for some reason decent werewolf movies only come around once every decade or so. In part, it's due to makeup and effects. It's a lot easier to make a vampire or a zombie look good, than to do a convincing werewolf. So, more vamp and zombie films are made than werewolf ones - and when you have an expanded number of films you have a bigger chance of good ones each year, whilst the bad ones disappear. Whereas with so few werewolf films a bad one is more memorable.

I am often struck by the similarity between the submarine genre and the werewolf genre. Both genres are somewhat 'B' movie genres with a handful of 'A' pictures. If you were to add up the number of 'A' pictures and 'B' pictures in both genres the lists would be very similar in number. As to why there are so few werewolf films it is partly because they tend to require a budget (what Marcus said). Most filmmakers don't have the imagination to be able to make films on a low budget.

"Das Boot" is my favourite. My favourites are: 1. "Das Boot: The 5-hour miniseries" which was originally broadcast on German T.V. 2. "The Hunt For Red October". 3. "Crimson Tide". 4. "The Cruel Sea" (makes a good companion piece to Das Boot). 5. "Run Silent, Run Deep".

I bought 'Das Boot' recently. It was a long time since I had seen it, great story!

Don't forget Down Periscope. One of my favourite 'worse group of people' style comedies.
I've not seen many Submarine films. Only ones I remember is the one I've just mentioned and Hunt for Red October.

Down Periscope was quite good. I actually watched it again recently on Sky. A very enjoyable comedy where the underdogs win. I love that.

Oh God, Van Helsing. The werewolves look like someone gave the Hulk a fur coat and then stuck a normal wolf's head on his shoulders. Also, they bounced around like rubber balls. And apparently they have green snot for blood. And they were bitten by a radioactive spider considering the way they scale walls. New Moon werewolves had a similar problem, what with them being obviously weightless and bouncy, Eclipse kind of fixed this. They're still pretty lame though. Absolutely worst werewolf I've ever seen though is the one in the original Boy who Cried Werewolf from the 1970's. I want you to look at this picture and realize that someone actually put this into a horror movie.

Those eyes look wild and insane. Either it's good acting, or the fellow has just been told they accidentally used superglue to stick on the prostetics.
