I'm shocked, shocked I tell you - *with my fingers crossed behind my back*. There is nothing wrong with rubber teeth that bend when a mouth closes. It's just good Health and Safety Evolution on the part of the darkwolf to stop the him bitting his own tongue.

The 'Dark Wolf' producers are so happy with this forum! We keep mentioning it...free publicity!
Did I mention 'Van Helsing' sucks?

Actually yes your right, they're probably dead chuffed. I'm guessing viewership of this god awful movie has doubled since we start bitching about it on here. I bet people watch it cos they're thinking no way could it be that bad. And in case anyone is thinking that, please believe me........ It's awful!!!!!!!!!!!!
I liked Van Helsing, i mean the effects were bad and it's very below par compared with other movies on similar budget. However i still quite enjoyed it.

I like van helsing, as long as I ignore the baby vampire things, the poor cgi on some of the werewolves scenes, and the over-the-top super gadgets that are impossible (like buz saws that can be hand powered), and finally the ever so annoying sidekick that is so sterotyped as to draw a long disappointed sigh when he first shows up in the film.
Apart from that, the film is fun to watch.

Apart from that, the film is fun to watch. Also, Kate Beckinsale in that corset. Really, I'm watching a video of them on Youtube, and I just can't see the appeal in the Van Helsing werewolves. The design isn't terribly unique, the CGI is mediocre at best, and the character wasn't that well animated. The best thing about them is the skin ripping transformation, which is always a concept I found really cool. Yet Trick 'R Treat did a better effect with practical makeup on a much smaller budget. These guys bounced around like rubber balls, fell off cliffs, and looked pretty. Oh, the beat where the Van Helsing werewolf looks up at Dracula and sharpens its claws was pretty cool. On a whole though they were cartoony effects and ineffective villains, lacking any sense of power or menace.

What I find so utterly offensive about 'Van Helsing', is that fudging Universal was in charge of making the film. Every poverty row studio, from Sam Shermans IIP to Roger Corman's New World / Horizon, successfully jumped on the classic monsters bandwagon at some point. Heck even Copolla pulled off a fab (if slightly emo) Dracula. And then there is Universal, they get the opportunity to do the greatest of greatest Monster movies, and they quite simply refuse to deliver quality.
I don't really care if the wolves in an indie look kind of 'meh' because they did their best and had fun doing it. The whole 'Van Helsing' thing is just so insulting to me because it's such a simple formula to get right. Classic Monsters can be made with little fuss on time and on budget by little guys, why can't Universal get their own 1930s/40s formula straight?
Dracula was a pre-Twilight emo, the Wolves were 2-Dimensional, the look of the film was stolen from every horror classic except anything done by Universal or Hammer, Frankenstein's Monster looked like an embryo even though Universal is the only studio in the world legally allowed to make him look like the classic Karloff monster, the CGI was crap, and Steven Sommers...well, let's just say I disagree with some artistic decisions he made.
Few, I'm glad I didn't start a rant about this one... ;D

Here's something else that pisses me off depending on who's doing it: using normal wolves for your werewolf.
Sure, it's true to legend and on occasion it does work (Namely in "Company of Wolves") but most of the time it comes across as either laziness or trying to appeal to wolfaboos and dog lovers. Wolves were scary...in the 1800's. With the advent of stuff like Wolf's Rain and Three Wolf Moon wolves have gone from frightening, mysterious predators to pop culture anti heroes, or even superheroes. Warriors of Gaia, blah blah blah, what have you.
And it's not just Twilight, either. Although that's the example everyone runs to when discussing the pussification of monsters these days. Cuddlewolves have been around for far longer.

I have to agree. Normal wolves for the werewolf is lame.
I also agree with Hawkeye on the whole can't get your own fomula right.

I don't mind werewolves turning into wolves. As long as they look like wolves and not domestic dogs like german shephards pretending to be wolves.
I think a wolf can still be scary, if presented correctly in a film, ideally as a pack of wolves rather than a single wolf. But it needs to be more a hunting, stalking style, rather than the "in your face" horror that works with the more monster like beasties.
If you give them the right setting, angles, mood, and lines, than I think they can be excellent.

I'd rather real wolves not be used as werewolves, at least not as the "monstrous, tear your throat out" kind because wolves are beautiful animals and have a bad rap already. If you're going for a four-legged wolf-like monster I'd rather you go the 'demon dog' route of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.
