Cumberbatch is in it - that's a good sign!

Actually just watched this one tonight for the first time. It wasn't bad at all. Gary Oldman was great. It really was better than I thought it would be. No transformation though. Plot twist at the end had me excited.
The wolf didn't look too bad either.
Not perfect or top 10 by any means but it wasn't a bad movie.

Looking at it as a werewolf film, than I agree it's not in my top 10. But looking at it from a fairy-tale film (which I class it more as) than it is in my top 10.

I just didn't gel with it at all. The heroine really did annoy the hell out of me.

Yes I am necroing an old thread. Just got around to seeing the movie. It seems that all the reviewers either hate or love this movie, and mostly the former. I am in the middle. I liked it. Not perfect. Not classic. But a good watch. It seems to me that much of the hate is really about ‘punishing’ director Catherine Hardwicke for having made the Twilight series. Acting was on the money most of the time, especially with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role and Gary Oldman doing another delightfully nasty guy. No complaints about dialog. Camera work was quite good. Sets and scenery are great. The story is interesting and somewhat out of the ordinary by today’s standards, harking back to the supernatural type of werewolf. All the plot pieces fit together neatly. The creature itself is CGI but nicely done, compared to some other abortions. *cough* AWIP *cough* The story has references to Little Red Riding Hood, both Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault versions. Since I know both stories (I had a non-PC childhood), I wondered which ending they were going for. It turned out to be some of each spun into something original. Who is the werewolf? All the clues are right there. But so are red herrings. Plus, the final answer is not that simple. But entirely satisfactory. Bottom Line: Considerably better than a lot of other 21st century werewolf movies. But not the best. Worth watching nonetheless. In a story set in a rural village somewhere in Europe hundreds of years ago, how do you get around having an all-white cast? Very cleverly. And the black men are important elements in the plot, but not because they are black, a point never mentioned. No tokens here. IMO having them be black just seems to fit better.

I've owned it on DVD and Blu for years and haven't watched it yet. One of these days...
