Another one I should have watched yesterday instead of today - Trick 'r Treat. Just as much fun the third time around.

To clarify for the viewers at home, ArcLight and I are talking about different movies that both happen to feature major characters named Sam(mi). The Trick 'r Treat I was referring to is from 2007 and is unrelated to the 1986 movie with a similar name, although both include dark humor.

And both are highly recommended (at least, by me) Meanwhile, following it up with Night of the Demons (1988)

Night of the Demons 1988 is a perfect example of the horror movie rule Sex = Death. That reminded me of Night of the Demon (1957), called Curse of the Demon in the cut down US version. The full version can be found on Dailymotion, which is where I checked it out today. www.dailymotion.com/video/x1xd6p8If anyone is looking for gore or exotic FX, this is not a movie for you. Likewise if one is of the instant gratification mindset. After a good start to let you know the film means business where you get you first see a pretty good demon, the film is mostly a growing awareness on the part of the protagonist that something spooky and menacing is going on building up to a scary (by 1957 standards) and satisfying climax. It was directed by Jacques Tourneur of Cat People and I Walked With a Zombie fame, and he had not lost his touch with this one. I remember seeing this, the shorter 'Curse' version, in the summer of 1958 together with Revenge of Frankenstein.

To stay in the Halloween mood, I watched Der Nachtmahr (The Nightmare) 2015. Shudder has it with English subtitles. My German is over 50 years out of date so that was really important. Warning - it is about teenagers who party a lot in the summer and it is LOUD. I watched it with the sound off. Very strange. You never know what is real. Or even what real means. I liked it that there was never any resolution of the question. I also liked then 23 year old Carolyn Genzkow doing a perfect portrayal of a 17 year old girl. I have Shudder, will check it out. The rest of my Watchathon... Shock Waves (1977) The Guest (2014) Prince of Darkness (1987) Hell Fest (2018) Hell Night (1981) House of the Devil (2009) Trick r Treat (2009) Creepshow (1982) Dr. Giggles (1992) The Roost (2005) The Beast Within (1982)

You watched all of those movies this Halloween season? Wow!
Quite a few of them I would definitely recommend. Others not so much.

Quite a few of them I would definitely recommend. Others not so much. OTOH, there are some I have never seen yet. And of course, as I said someplace or other around here, my opinions are often different from others. Suum cuique

Watched Salem's Lot earlier today, the 1979 adaptation. I hope that was the full length one as shown in two parts on TV and not the chopped up theatrical release. The changes from the novel were IMO appropriate (mostly) for a movie adaptation. What works on the page and what works on the screen are not always the same thing. The least effective part, again IMO, was David Soul as the protagonist. Not terrible, just could have been better. A number of adaptations of Stephen King works have references to the book that go nowhere and simply underscore that a major change from the book is coming up, and not in a good way. Not that the movies in question were all that bad. It just seems like they are thumbing their noses at those who know the book. Examples that especially piss me off are Christine and The Shining.

David Soul phoned it in for the most part. Same for Bonnie Bedelia as Susan. Really liked Lance Kerwin as Mark though. The 2004 TNT adaptation was also a mixed bag. I liked Rob Lowe and Samantha Mathis as Ben and Susan. Rutger Hauer as Barlow, not so much. They shot it either New Zealand or Australia, can't recall which one. Robert Mammone was the best of the local Actors cast IMHO. A third adaptation is in development, James Wan will be co-writing it for New Line. I think the Director will be the same one who did the recent It films. I think Timothy Olyphant would be a great choice for Ben Mears.

The kid (Lance Kerwin) did a great part, exactly in line with the character in the novel. I agree about the 2004 version - good and bad. Concerning the Rutger Hauer performance see this. The 2004 miniseries was filmed in Australia.
