Concerning the Rutger Hauer performance see this. A Cowboy? I think he got it backwards. www.imdb.com/title/tt0060168/More seriously, he was obviously trying to duplicate the success of his 'tears in the rain' monologue from Blade Runner that he wrote himself.

I watched Trick 'r Treat (2004) yet again. I think I now understand all the twists and turns - which are quite clever and always fully appropriate - and are also always subtly foreshadowed. That is, as opposed to the out of the blue twists for their own sake too often found in other movies. This is one very carefully and beautifully constructed movie. I cannot fault it in any way.

Asylum Blackout (2011) aka The Incident
Watching this now, set during 1989 in Washington state.
A local rock band, works in the Kitchen of a Maximum security Asylum.
For the Criminally insane.
One rainy night the power goes out and the Inmates run amok. Terrorizing and killing the staff.
The three bandmates try to survive the night.
Until help comes.
Low budget fare, but pretty good so far.

Didn't care for the ending at all.

Didn't care for the ending at all. I have not seen the movie but I know the plot including the ending. Without discussing the details, it strikes me as another lazy way out of coming up with a proper resolution to all the violence, gore etc. Too much of that these days.

Watched The Slumber Party Massacre again recently, one of the few 80's slasher films directed by a Woman.

Watched The Slumber Party Massacre again recently, one of the few 80's slasher films directed by a Woman. I am not a big fan of slasher films, or in this case a 'driller' film. (As if the symbolism of a gigantic power drill was not so obvious.) But I understand this one has its own devoted offbeat following.

Watching Dark Was the Night right now. For me, this is an underrated low budget gem. Kevin Durand goes against type and turns in solid, nuanced performance. His best to date IMHO.
Nick Damici and Lukas Haas are also great in supporting roles.
My only issue, the ending.

Watched The Slumber Party Massacre again recently, one of the few 80's slasher films directed by a Woman. Watched it, free on tubi tubitv.com/movies/465154/slumber_party_massacreA totally for real slasher film and a send up of slashers at the same time. Nicely done. The director is clearly poking fun at the male audience who have expectations about a slumber party with lots of T&A, especially the early shower scene. Part of the fun is that after the first two bloody kills there are I think four fake jump scares before there is any action again. Then gore aplenty. Presenting the killer as more than just 'evil in a mask' as in some other movies, we get to see what his insanity is about. And then there is the obvious symbolism of his 'drill' being chopped off with a machete. Plus the usual 'not quite dead yet' scene. But he does get properly dead in the end. I like the different take on Final Girl. You knew who it had to be from the beginning but got thrown off by little Courtney coming along. You did not know there would be three survivors.

First time I saw this movie, didn't expect that many to be left standing at the end.

I checked out The Last Exorcism Netflix www.netflix.com/watch/70136074This would be a good Halloween movie. The ‘found footage’ format is a little tired to be sure. But in this movie the filming is (supposedly) being done by a professional and the results are less intrusive and annoying than in some other movies. Acting is quite good, especially by the ‘possessed’ girl. And I do mean SPOILER.
You have to pay attention and think about what is happening. For instance, the demon is playing the preacher, making him think the girl is just psychologically disturbed. That happens in The Exorcist too but all the obviously supernatural events work against that conclusion there. Here in The Last Exorcism, the genuine supernatural events are very late in coming and the preacher getting his faith back so quickly is a bit hard to swallow. I do have a problem with the girl going to the hotel, clearly to get them to come back. Why? They are obviously unwelcome at the ritual, so it must be the girl wanting to get out of it. But if it was her acting independently and not the demon controlling her, how did she know where to go and manage to travel five miles on her own at night? Maybe I missed something. You can miss important things in this movie, inviting a second viewing.
