I was at Film4's horror double-bill in London last night, it was great. They showed The Descent and The Thing on a huge screen in the courtyard of Somerset House. Anyway, I mention it cos unexpectedly Neil Marshal (director of The Descent and Dog Soldiers) was there! He gave a speech and seemed cool. When he mentioned Dog Soldiers a sizable portion of the crowd started cheering!

That's cool. Neil Marshall is a great director, I wish he'd signed on to do Dog Soldiers 2. Apparently they're doing a sequel to The Descent but he's not directing that either!

Sequel to the Descent?? Hmm, don't think I'd be into that, specially with no Marshall. It's a shame he's not doing Dog Soldiers 2 but I remain cautiously optimistic about it...

Do we really need a sequel to the Descent? I don't think so, i thought the film was great and the ending brilliant. Such a refreshing change. Plus like you said i'm slightly nervous about the fact that Neil Marshall is not linked to either that or DS2. I know that at the moment he making a movie called Doomsday which according to Total Film has a "tortue scene that would make Daniel Craig's balls shrivel. It's gonna rock." Sounds promising and is gonna feature stars from both Dog Soldiers and the Descent. Although i have to say i would be curious regarding the potential story line to a sequel to the Descent. Would she still be alive when others went down or has she evolved into something else as well.............

Yeah, I like the sound of his upcoming "Ninth Legion" project as well, cos roman movies are always fun. I wonder if it'll have Kevin McKidd. He seems to be getting type-cast as roman soldiers lately.

Didn't he orignally want to do a sequel, but it would have been soldiers vs some other monsters (vamps or zombies or something)? Presumably the money men wanted another werewolf movie, but Neil wasn't interested. The proposed Descent sequel just sounds like a bad idea to me. The first is a perfectly formed story with a great ending (the UK ending NOT the US ending). Doomsday looks and sounds fabulous. Neil Marshall doing an Escape from New York/The Warriors/The Road Warrior/28 Days Later hybrid in a dark and brutal style. Bring it on!

The fact that you say there are two different endings makes me want to see "The Descent" now. I presume the unrated edition will have both.
So, what's in the UK ending that makes it better? Does Bruce Campbell come in with a shotgun and chainsaw and destroy everything? That's the perfect ending to any horror movie.

hmm, will have to watch descent again. I don't remember anything about an infection, or evolution, or transformation in it.
When I first read the bit about her being infected at the end, I thought you were talking about The Cave, rather than Descent. Will definately have to watch it again, seems I missed a key part of the storyline.

Yeah, Neil Marshall wanted to make "Dog Soliders 2" (though presumably it wouldn't have been called that) a movie about british soldiers vs vampires. The producers didn't go for it because they wanted it to be about american soldiers this time, and they wanted werewolves again.
I didn't realise "The Descent" had a different ending in the US, though I think I can guess what it is. Pfft. They tried to do the same thing with Terry Gilliam's "Brazil". America should embrace the British sense of hopelessness!

**MILD SPOILER**
I'd heard from various reviews and sources that the US cinema release of The Descent had a different ending to the original UK/Neil Marshall ending. I won't spell it out, but I believe the US version ends on a less downbeat note.
No idea if the proper ending will be on a US unrated dvd. I have my original UK region 2 release of the film (sat right next to Dog Soldiers) in all its mighty gory glory.

The US ending misses off the last 30 seconds or so, rendering it slightly daft, illogical but less downbeat. Me, I like downbeat endings. And 'Brazil' was exactly what I thought of when watching the Descent! I like werewolf's idea that the survivor girl would still be down there as some sort of savage, woulb be a bit weird if she'd evolved to live in the dark tho since evolution tends to take thousands if not millions of years!
