So I've fallen a bit behind in the website updates again. The reason this time isn't my laziness. Okay, so it's a little bit laziness. Maybe 40% laziness. But also, it's because I have this crazy notion of redesigning the entire site.
Recently I've been working on getting into the whole programming thing professionally. In web design I've been doing a bit of JavaScript and CSS and so on, and that means that looking at the website in it's current form now makes me feel all icky inside.
The main changes are going to be behind-the-scenes type things, that will generally make the website a bit more automated and less work when it comes time to update. There will be no more of these nasty confusing frame thingies either. It might even become a proper php-run database like the IMDb, which will mean proper searching abilities (searching by keyword, actor, classification, etc.) and other exciting things. So yeah. I'm also open to any suggestions for possible new features for the site, general ideas and so forth.
Going now.

The whole search thing sounds pretty cool, great for people who want to see "that werewolf movie they saw but can't remember which one it was"
PS Exterminate

Nope the daleks haven't got me yet. I'm keeping an eye for them, though. They won't catch me off guard this time. This time I'll be all like, "EAT MY SONIC SCREWDRIVER, BITCH!" Ahem. Been playing around with some potential designs for the new look of the site. I'm going for something with a bit more simplicity, something a bit more conventional and welcoming than the current scary green-and-black zombie-tinged frame fest. This is what I've come up with so far. Accessible, unprentious. A blue moon and some silver bullety things. Where can I possibly go wrong?

I love clean simple designs. When I go to a site, it's generally because I'm looking for the information there, not to see how many tutorials on flash someone has read.
Meaning, I likey!
(there will still be the option just to browse thru the titles, right? I love the alphabetical/chronological lists.)

Yeah, I agree. I always find flash a bit too ... umm ... flashy. JavaScript is generally all you really need to make a website interesting.
There will still be the ability to browse the site alphabetically and chronologically, that's pretty much essential. The only difference is that with the new site when you follow those links it'll actually be filtering the database according to title and release date, but the end result will be just the same.

Although that doesn't look bad at all, I would have to say that, if I were a first time visitor, I would not as quickly stick to it as I did to the current version. It's very...plain...it doesn't at all say werewolf, or cult movie, and I think the current site with it's simple yet stylish green on black does achieve that in a way. You don't have to stick to the current design ofcourse, but I think the minimalistic approach does not do this great website justice. anyway, whatever changes you will bring, I want you to know that I (and I think all of us) will support your choice and decision

I prefer black background to white, since we're talking about movies of the horror genre. A red font would not look good, though, that'd make it too cheesy.

Hmm, here's another similar design but with a black-and-blue motif going on. A bit more werewolfy perhaps. I mean, if werewolves made websites I'm pretty sure this is what they'd look like.

I think that particular blue you have there works great, the moon/logo come out great this way.

Dumdedum. Progress. Things are moving along quite nicely with this new site. I've got the database structure up and running so now it's just a question of writing all the necessary PHP scripts and inputing all the data (not looking forward to that part ...)
What will probably happen over the next week or two is that I'll upload a Beta version with a limited number of movies in the database (for instance, all the Paul Naschy movies and all the Howling movies), so that everyone will get a chance to test-drive the site before I go ahead and build the whole database. Just in case it turns out I need to change the whole database structure or something.
Need sleep now!

I wouldn't worry too much, a lot of the new site will appear eerily familiar. I haven't changed too much in the way of layout. Here's some screencaps of the review of SOMEBODY's favourite movie to illustrate: Right now I'm working on the idea of having an "Advanced Query" function on the database browsing page. So you'd have the A-Z and dates links at the top like on the old site, then below that you'd have a form into which you could enter your own date range and other criteria (such as 'Just show me movies that are available on DVD and that have been reviewed', that kinda thing), and the site would then query the database and return all the results that match that criteria. Databases are fun!
