That is a bit worrying. The first article I posted told us the script was locked and ready to go. Many people that have read it seem to love it and Tony Hopkins on Jonathan Ross last Friday confirmed he was doing it. Hopefully it is just some minor studio jitters. Otherwise let’s just hope the strike will be over fairly soon with writers getting a much fairer deal out of it.

One thing I found encouraging in the actual Variety article was that the phrasing about how the studio isn't quite happy with where the script is at is that it comes after a list of three separate films and doesn't necessarily indicate clearly which of the three the statement is referring to.

Wanted to post this for quite some time and finally got round to it. Wolf-Man trying to do unspeakable things to his make-up artist (Jack Pierce). Wolf-Man trying to do unspeakable things to his make-up artist (Rick Baker). Yes people, who ever thought Lon Chaney Jr. trying to punch Jack Pierce on the nose would become a good luck charm for the new "Wolf-Man"? Well...nobody probadly...because it really isn't...in fact it's little more than a mildly interesting post on a werewolf movie forum...really...it is...

Bad news guys.... Mark Romanek, the director, has quit. Apparently he couldn't handle the sizable budget which he just wasn't used to. So, no director and a writer's strike....... I'm starting to think this thing won't happen anytime soon.

I agree. It looks more likely to be a 2010/11 release. Either that or they'll grab the first director they can and rush it through - which I'm hoping they don't as it'll effect the films quality.

Booooo!
They should get David Lynch, he's not doing much at the moment. Or William Friedkin. Or me.

Even worse news is that over on AICN, Harry is saying that he's been told Universal is going with Brett Ratner as Romanek's replacement. He was literally one of the first directors on my "I hope they don't pick THIS guy" list. He has made a string of terrible to mediocre-at-best films, and I just do not want him within ten miles of this film. In less than a day, this has gone from ridiculously promising to bitterly disappointing.

Brett Ratner? It rings a bell. Someone remind me of his work.

Huh. I heard it was a choice between Breck Eisner (Sahara..hmm) and Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).

Ganked from BoxOfficeProphets:
"February 1, 2008 Universal narrows search for new director
Universal released a shortlist of possible directors to helm the horror film The Wolfman, which is slated to begin production in a few weeks. Directors that have either met with the studio or will do so this week include Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand), Frank Darabont (The Mist), James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) and Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III). Because of budgeting problems, the film's original director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) pulled out of the production. Source: The Hollywood Reporter"
Of those, I'm not familiar with Mangold. I'd probably pick Johnston ("The Rocketeer" is still one of my all-time favorite films and shows he can do a period piece) or Darabont.
Basically anyone on the list other than Ratner.
