I squeezed in that Christmas classic Black Christmas (the 1974 original, of course). It's not an annual watch, but I like to run it every few years. Black Christmas (1974) MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone! 🎅 I had watched this a few days ago. The earliest Christmas slasher movie I am aware of, this film invented a number of the memes that would become standard in the genre. And it is still better than quite a few of its successors.

I'm heading off to mom's in a little bit, so it'll probably be A CHRISTMAS STORY all afternoon, like every Christmas.
When I get home tonight I'm thinking of sneaking in either Gremlins or Silent Night, Bloody Night

A Christmas Carol (1935)
The earliest film version of Dickens' story. Entertaining but too short (60 minutes) to build the proper mood. Also short on FX, e.g., you do not get to see Marley (only Scrooge can see him, we are told). Seymour Hicks works hard at it but is not quite as good as Reginald Owen in the 1938 version and definitely no Alistair Sim (1951). Interestingly, the 1938 film can be seen mostly as an elaboration of the 1935 one with almost all scenes retained and expanded and one scene irrelevant to the story eliminated.
One Winter Night (2019)
Witches and Demons and Ghosts, Oh My! No, this film has nothing to do with Oz, but it does have all three of those. Not bad at all for low budget. In fact, keeping the focus on people in a minimum of ordinary settings helps the mood, making one care about the people being threatened. Long (126 minutes with a mere two minutes of ending credits) and fairly slow paced, the movie nonetheless keeps one's attention in trying to understand what is happening. It all becomes clear but without any boring expostulations. Understanding comes with following the story.
The demons look rather good, although one never gets to see them in full for long or in the light. Main in a suit for sure - the movie wastes no money on CGI or the like. But spooky and scary anyway. And you do not have to wait interminably for it. They show up in nightmares, even one right at the beginning. Acting and dialog are good for the main characters. Camera work, direction, editing, music - no complaints.
Since the story spans several days, it is not all that obvious what the title means. The clues are there but one does not need to 'get the joke' to understand the movie. But if you do, it makes it all a little darker.

Stephanie (2017)
Not a Christmas movie or a winter movie and neither does it involve snow, ice or cold. But it is vaguely like Home Alone, in a horrible way, so I figured I would stick it here rather than start another thread.
It takes a while before one finds out what is going on with the monster. Before that it is quite spooky and unsettling. After that, the movie drags a bit here and there what with much angst and hand-wringing but the pace picks up again. The final denouement should be expected but it still packs a wallop.
BTW the little girl is played by Shree Crooks who does a marvelous job of acting but is actually quite a bit older than the character is supposed to be.

The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967)
Not about Christmas but set in winter, I watched this horror comedy, with the emphasis on comedy, to give the neck biters a chance to celebrate the holidays. Although it is still amusing and entertaining after all these years, I must confess to some dark feelings when watching it. The movie features Sharon Tate who would be savagely slaughtered along with her unborn child a couple of years later by the Charles Manson gang.

Avalanche Sharks (2014)
Some SyFy cheese to lighten the mood. Put your brain to sleep and accept that through the magic of cheap CGI, supernatural sharks can swim fast through snow before they leap out and eat you. Native American curse, cool skiing and snowboarding, hot babes in bikinis in hot tubs, dumb decisions, good body count and lots of blood. No cerebral activity required.

The Children (2008)
I always thought little children were monsters anyway.

End of Days (1999) The devil is going to get the pre-chosen girl pregnant just before New Year's Day 1999 EST - nothing to do with the time, it is about coincidental celestial alignments. This will usher in the end of days, and the devil will rule the world. There is enough good action to make it a proper Schwarzenegger movie and enough spookiness to make it a good horror flick. Schwarzenegger actually does some decent acting and Gabrielle Byrne does a great devil. Kevin Pollak and CCH Pounder are just fine as always in their supporting roles. Based on what the 'porcelain guy' says on the train, I wanted to see a Rosemary's Baby type impregnation scene with a nekkid Robin Tunney. But if course that does not happen. Arnold saves the day as usual. The most we get to see is about two seconds of topless, non closeup, while she gets ready for a bath.
Part of the plot is that John, the author of Revelation, saw the Number of the Beast upside down in his vision. It was not 666 but 999, 1999 being the final year of Satan's thousand year imprisonment. Other than the fact that the Beast of Revelation is not Satan, there is another major problem with this. Arabic numerals were not invented until well after Revelation was written. John actually wrote three different Greek letters (chi xi stigma) that stand for six hundred, sixty and six. Most bible translate it as 666 but King James translates it as the more literally accurate 'six hundred, three score and six'. But nobody likes a spoilsport.

The Night of the Virgin (2016) This movie really sucks. It is about being gross like "Don't step on the cockroaches. Its bad luck." And gross like and I do mean gross OK you were warned Having a cup of menstrual blood land on a guys head is only one example The characters are unappealing, the plot ludicrous and the movie does not seem to have any point. It happens on New Years' Eve is the only reason I watched it. Don't waste your time.

Holiday Hell (2019) An anthology of three stories told by a mysterious shopkeeper selling mysterious things. A women is looking for a last minute Christmas gift for her rather strange sister. She tells the final story. Each of the first three stories is related to an item the shopkeeper offers. The first story is about Valentine's Day and IMO is the weakest of them all - college kids in an abandoned house with a bloody history - stop me if you heard this before. The other three are about Hanukkah (a Rabbi doll with some unusual powers) Christmas (a slasher of course and rather well done) and, a rarity, Winter Solstice. Acting and dialog range from passable to not so good. The delicious ending sequence ties back to the final story. Overall pretty good if not great.

RED (2010) ATM (2012) Black Christmas (2006) Wind Chill (2007) RED I have not seen. ATM likewise Black Christmas (2006) should never have been made IMO. It is an insult to the original. I commented on Wind Chill earlier. Impressions?
