Whiteout (2009) New Year's Evil (1980) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Whiteout was hyped as horror and I guess that might possibly apply. Even if not, it is still a good unknown killer movie. Beckinsale is quite good in a straight role. And old pro Skerritt is good as usual. Plot and development are interesting and properly done. Dialog is fine. Good flick, whether you call it horror or not. Since the movie is set in Antarctica at the onset of winter, I did not expect to 'see much' of Kate, that is, no skin tight leather outfits or the like. But the filmmakers decided to throw us old dogs a small bone. New Year's Evil is IMO not very good. Oh it's got killings and blood enough. But there is otherwise not really much of interest in it. And I saw the ending coming a mile away.

And I saw the ending coming a mile away. Whiteout was okay, but (as usual) not as good as the book - in this case, a graphic novel written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Steve Lieber. They also did a follow-up - Whiteout: Melt (I'd also recommend Rucka's Queen & Country comic and novel series) New Year's Evil didn't really work for me, either. The 80s New Wave atmosphere was kinda cool but like most of the movie not really well-done enough to put it over the top. Most of the elements for a fun slasher were there, they just needed to be, well, better.

The Eve (2015) Murder and Mayhem in and around a house on isolated Martha's Vineyard at year's end. Not your usual college kids but a few years older. Most technical aspects are good - direction, music, camera work, editing/continuity. But dialog and acting are sub-standard. The movie also takes too long on setup, examining the relationships of the four characters endlessly. Nothing of real interest comes to light about them in the first 40 minutes (half of the movie) that you could not already deduce in the first 15. There are some fake jump scares that seem to have been thrown in because they knew it would be too boring otherwise. For me it got to the point where I did not like any of them and wanted them all dead. The movie eventually gets down to multiple bloody murders but none tremendously gory. Not recommended. Using standard horror movie logic, I 'made' the killer very early even before the first killing. As soon as the full set of characters was established it seemed obvious. This was confirmed by some overly blatant and amateurish red herrings.

Horror Express (1972)
One of my faves, where Lee and Cushing team up.

The Hateful Eight (2015)
A bunch of people snowbound in a tavern in the Old West. Not strictly speaking a horror movie, but the body count is very high. Lots of blood too. Complex characters and relationships in classic Tarantino style. Loads of twists and turns in the plot. Good dialog. Fine acting by top notch cast. All technical aspects without flaw. And as usual with Tarantino, nobody is squeaky clean here. Not horror? So what, it is a great winter watch.

Some winter themed movies I have watched in the past but did not re-watch this time around. The Shining While a great horror movie, it is annoying in some ways for those who read the book. Let the Right One In A different take on vampire stories and truly excellent Misery Well done by itself. But again a problem for anyone who read the book Fargo Not horror, but a definitely horror movie worthy scene in it. Plus it has a fair body count. And it is as cold as a witch’s anatomy. Ghostbusters II New Year’s Eve is central to the plot Sadly disappointing effort Groundhog’s Day I only watch this on the appropriate date A comedy of course, but also very dark in places And with that I will close out my participation in this thread. Unless I don’t. What it is, is that I find myself watching horror TV series on Netflix. I went through the first five seasons of Supernatural on and off over the last few months but cannot get into season 6. I find the Campbell’s a bit annoying for one thing. Anyway, I tried out Stranger Things and immediately got hooked. A big part of that is the exactly right over the top performances by Winona Ryder, who I have loved since Beetlejuice. (She should have gotten the Oscar for Little Women IMO. Maybe her subsequent life would have been different.) I will still be watching werewolf/horror movies and posting here of course, as often as watching Stranger Things allows. Coming Winona…

Monster Squad OK, nothing to do with Christmas, New Year's, winter, snow etc. But it does involve a very important day, which happens only every hundred years. Anyway I watched it again. Plus there is a werewolf. And Dracula throwing sticks of dynamite. And the Mummy coming unwound. Etc. Cheesy FX that were par for the course 30+ years ago. Funny and subtly smart. (*) Even scary in parts. Chock full of references to specific scenes in specific old Universal B+W horror movies. Next time I will make a list. (*) The 'scary German guy' knows a lot about monsters and not only the kind in the movie. The menorah in his house and the blue numbers on his arm make that plain. Also when Frankenstein (they insist on calling the creature that, and tie it to an in-joke) who BTW looks different from the Karloff version, is handed a Frankenstein Halloween mask, he exclaims "Bogus". The familiar Karloff look is a trademark of Universal Studios. And Frankie has bolts in the sides of his forehead instead of the neck, ala Mad Magazine's version.
And with that, back to Winona...

Personally, I'd count Monster Squad as a werewolf movie (the same wolfman from Fright Night Part 2, BTW) so it's always on topic around these parts. Also one of my favorite wolfman style designs. Stranger Things does indeed rock, due in no small part to Ryder. She sells it. My moderator powers don't seem to let me create a new board for television (or books, unfortunately) but we do have the 'General' board for "anything" so feel free to wax philosophical about whatever TV shows or movies (or books!) are currently floating your boat there.

It's that time again...
Metropolitan (1990)
Kicking things off with Whit Stillman instead of a horror.
The goings on with a group of Snobby young Mahattanites, during the Holiday season.
