From the Depths (2020)
Well, it's the last weekend of summer (and probably my last full weekend off of work for a while) so why not another shark movie?
This one, I gotta say, is a bit different. Liz (Angelica Briones) survived a shark attack that took the lives of her sister and boyfriend. A year later, she's a few months into a new relationship but that's about the only thing going right in her life. She still continually has nightmares about the attack and now it seems the lack of sleep has caused those nightmares to come while she's awake, as well as adding appearances by her dead sister and boyfriend into the mix.
Is she just flipping out or is it something else?
Definitely an interesting idea. Really low budget, tho not the worst CGI shark I've seen. I particularly liked Marissa Godinez as Liz's sister Payton (she also gets camera credit for drone operator and one for effects for running the shark fin - gotta love these shoestring productions), an undead character in the mold of Jack from An American Werewolf in London.
On Amazon Prime and free on Tubi.

We're neck-deep in overtime at work so finding the time to watch - or more accurately, the energy to stay awake for - a movie aint happening right now.
I am managing to stay not too far behind on some TV so I'll give Evil a plug - the first season is on Netflix (but I guess only until the end of the month) and the current season is streaming on Paramount+.
And speaking of Netflix, I just checked out the first episode of Midnight Mass from Mike Flanagan, the guy behind their Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor shows. Those were good so I'm expecting this one to be decent, too.

Host (2020) During the COVID lockdown, a couple of friends decide to hold a seance over Zoom which works far better than expected (or worse depending on your point of view). Guess this counts as 'found-footage' since the whole thing is from the point-of-view of their laptop/cellphone cameras while on the Zoom call. Pretty effective, similar in basic plot to the earlier 'Unfriended,' and only around an hour long so it doesn't overstay its welcome. 7:30AM probably isn't the most traditional time to watch a horror movie but the noises of neighbors moving around while I was watching added to the "immersion." It also dethroned Sinister as "Scariest Movie" according to these folks: www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/features/science-of-scareStreaming on Shudder.

I've seen films like Host, The Den, Searching and the Unfriended series referred to as Screen Life, a subgenre in Found Footage.

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Since I've got HBOMax I checked this out.
Angelina Jolie as a 'smokejumper' - a firefighter trained to parachute into forests to fight fires. After a tragedy during a fire, she's relegated to watchtower duty when she doesn't pass the psych evaluation and as such is on hand to protect a young boy on the run from professional hitmen in the Montana wilderness. And of course, there's a forest fire to contend with.
Honestly didn't think much of this one.

A couple of repeats making sure I have everything hooked up right with the new TV. It's still a mess the way I have my system Frankensteined together, but it's working...
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Picked up the 3D version of this so I checked it out. Still fun. Still miss the old, low-tech Spidey I grew up reading, tho. Maybe with the next reboot...
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Why not make it a double feature? Spidey is my favorite superhero, after all.

Did my running around after work yesterday so I snagged a couple from RedBox while I was out...
Free Guy (2021)
Enjoyable Ryan Reynolds flick about an NPC in a Grand Theft Auto style game becoming self-aware. Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi also starred. And the Mass Effect fan in me was delighted to see an N7 sticker on a laptop in the film.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021)
Another one of those origin films probably nobody asked for. I saw a review stating it was the best G.I.Joe movie but that bar is so low you could just step over it. But I also saw a writer I like who happens to be a big Joe fan say they really enjoyed it so I gave it a shot.
Very much an 80s ninja movie with a glossy, CGI-enhanced finish. Fun for what it was. Henry Golding is Snake Eyes, making bad decisions and questionable alliances in the search for the killer of his father. Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, and a personal favorite - Samara Weaving, also star.
And while technically I had it on for background, I ended up watching most of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) again.

Crammed some new streaming flix into my latest one-day weekend...
Red Notice (2021)
The big Netflix original with Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and Gal Gadot. Fun little heist movie.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
The 80s martial arts movie revival continues with this recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Simu Liu stars as the hero, with Awkwafina, Tony Leung, and the awesome Michelle Yeoh co-starring. Fun with a couple of standout fights (and the gratuitous CGI'fied final battle). Complete with extra scenes during and at the very end of the credits so stay for the whole thing. Now on Disney+.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Another Disney+ movie and also another Rock movie. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in the latest "based on a Disney ride" movie. Fun, if overblown. Would've preferred some of the action setpieces to have been scaled down a little, I think. Basically, someone put the scripts for Pirates of the Caribbean and Brendan Fraser's The Mummy in a blender.
