The Howling is tops. Huge, hulking, hairy, bipedal demonic looking wolf-beasts. Those werewolves are downright scary. The werewolf in Bad Moon as a very threatening look, and is similarly huge and bipedal, the only problem was some of the facial movements looked too mechanical. The best quadrupedal werewolf was the one in Ginger Snaps 2, though the werewolves from the first and third aren't nearly as good (I suspect because in the first, they didn't have much money, in the first place, and in the third they had to spend more money in other areas). My favorite flat-faced werewolf is the one from Hammer's Curse of the Werewolf.
To round out my top five I'll throw in the Uber-werewolf from Underworld 2 (Though I was downright pissed at how misused it was in that movie, such a waste of potential) and, Umm, Skinwalkers, though the actual movie sucked, I liked the old-school flat-faced, humanoid design, but with really wolfish facial features, they struck a great balance between the actors and the FX, you could tell who was who, but they still looked like badass werewolves.
So...
1. The Howling 2. Bad Moon 3. Ginger Snaps 2 4. Curse of the Werewolf 5. Skinwalkers
Some good designs that were ruined by CGI are; Cursed and Van Helsing. CGI werewolves are not now, nor will they ever be, scary or threatening to the slightest degree. If you want your werewolf movie to be a failure in every way that counts, use CGI to create your werewolf. Fuck CGI werewolves. Fuck them in hell!

I really like the werewolf from The Howling VI, as well. Very unique effective appearance.

1. Ginger Snaps 2 2. Werewolf TV series (I know it's not a movie, but i love the werewolves) 3. AWIL (classic!!) 4. Bad Moon 5. Van Helsing (only because i guess it looked sweet in the storyboard, but was then ruined by CGI. It could've been a hell of a werewolf, cause it's the first i've seen that was a 10 feet tall biped)

I don't mind CGI, as long as they have the budget to use it well.
Personally I find when the mix CGI for fine detail, built up on the older style of FX that it tends to work best. (though loads and loads and loads of money also makes CGI work).
But, I hope they don't stop using it, not because I prefer it (at the moment) but becuase the more they use it the more they'll spend on developing the technology until they get it right.

Van Helsin'gs budget was huge and the CGI still sucked. CGI always looks like CGI, you can always tell something is CGI and that takes me right out of the movie. It's especially bad when they try to CGI a monster, because it winds up looking so fake there's no threat presented what so ever. I can understand using CGI if the werewolf is doing something that it'd be impossible to do with a guy in a suit, but otherwise CGI is all wrong for werewolves.

I thought the CGI in Van Helsing was good.

It was average for Hollywood CGI, which is to say; fake looking and cartoonish. I can enjoy a CGI-fest action movie like a Transformers or a Spider-Man, but it just doesn't work for horror.

I definitely agree with CGI not working for horror, but I don't think of Van Helsing as a horror movie.
You want a good example of CGI not working in a horror movie: Dreamcatcher.

Yeah Dreamcatcher was terrible but your just not gonna get that butt thing to look good anyway! I didn't think of Van Helsing as a horror movie either, more of an action one, but then i don't really think of anything below a 15 certificate as a horror movie! Well actually anything with less than an 18 certificate.

The Haunting is rated G and is one of the best horror movies of all time. Jaws is PG, Night of the Living Dead would be PG-13 if it was rated. Ratings don't really matter.

I agree that Van Helsing wasn't a horror film. It's definately an action adventure/fantasy.

Interesting how different the rating system obviously is in America. Here The Haunting is a 15 and Night of the Living Dead is an 18. And yeah, Van Helsing wasn't really a horror movie, which was one of the most annoying things about it. The director was banging on about it being a great tribute to Universal's horror films, looked more like a tribute to Indiana Jones and James Bond to me.

You mean the original Haunting? From the 60's? Can't imagine anything that would put it at that rating. Here it's G, which means all ages. Anyway, most horror movies from the 30's and 40's would be G and PG, so saying just because something has a low rating it's not horror is kind of silly.
