I just said it wasn't a horror movie because it wasn't scary. It had some horror elements, but the real basis of it was adventure.

Yup, and considering disney put out a PG film that I'd class as Horror, you cannot just go on the rating to say when type of film they are.
That and a lot of modern horror, at least over here in England seems to be coming out at the 15 rating rather then the 18. Than again recently our sensor board seems to have relaxed what they'll accept in a 15 cert.
I'm curious now, after reading that bit about Van Helsing was supposed to be a tribute to the old horror films, but isn't a horror. Out of curiosity, what other films do you think would have been better if they'd been made as a horror film, rather then what they were made as (action/adventure, comedy, etc et)?
For me I wish they'd kept the Alien films as horror, rather then moving them into action, and I'd have much preferred the AvP if they'd mixed the action and horror aspects of the two (that is based on my thought that the alien films shoudl have stayed horror).

Well, this has mutated into a very interesting discussion. Damnedthing, yes I was talking about the original Haunting, I'ts one of my favourite movies and I wouldn't waste words on the god awful remake. Not sure why it's a 15 though. Yeah, I think there's plenty of good PG rated horrors though, Nosferatu and The Wolf Man for a start. Werewolf, I think Marcus was referring to Poltergeist (I may be wrong though). And Marcus, great question, there's loads of movies that would have been great as out-and-out horror movies. I agree about Alien, I would also add Beetlejuice tho I doubt many people would agree. And The Mask was originally written as a gory horror before Jim Carrey came on board, that woulda been great. Also I know that wasn't what they were going for but I could have done with a much stronger horror element in Blood and Chocolate.

Not read the book but occasionally consider looking for it. What's the target audience? I'm in my mid twenties, is it aimed at younger readers than me?

I'm glad Blood & Chocolate didn't stay close to the book. I didn't like the book, and I read it when I was pretty young...Junior High, maybe.

I find it strange that they would rate the original Haunting a 15. There was no gore, no nudity, no swearing. Maybe just because it's scary as shit.
I can't think of any movies at the moment that would have been better as straight horror. Though I do believe that any and all romance/romantic comedies/romantic dramadies would be infinitely better were there to be some kind of deranged torture killer, malfunctioning robot or rabid werewolf running around, just offing characters at random. God, that'd be sweet. Imagine 27 Dresses or Made of Honor with fuckin Eddie Quist or Freddy Kruger fucking shit up left and right.

Haha, I totally agree. And I just checked my Haunting DVD and it says in the rating box: Language: NONE sex/nudity:NONE Violence: NONE Other: SUSTAINED HORROR So I guess you're right!

Nope, I wasn't refering to Poltergeist, didnt' even know Poltergeist was a disney film. I was refering to one callled "Something Wicked This Way Comes" about a creapy travelling circus/side show. www.imdb.com/title/tt0086336/Interesting replies to the question of the films. One I'd have liked to have seen as proper horror was the spawn adaptation. Mind you I'd have prefered almost any change as it was a pretty bad film. Would have also liked to have sen Inverview with a Vampire having a stronger horror feel.

My mistake, Poltergeist was Warner Brothers. What a coincidence, I'm reading 'Something Wicked...' right now! Didn't know there was a film adaptation.
